As the title suggests, I’m bringing another file utility for your (free) armamentarium.   Sometimes you have to send large files, or part of a file and don’t wish to use dropbox or another FTP, or wish to manipulate portions of a file, edit them separately and store only parts of them on different devices. This is a great utility for that. It can also merge files or parts of them. “Description: WinMend File Splitter is a free file splitter and ...

Security disasters continue at Sony: They finally got Play Station Network back up and running after a series of hacks severely compromised it, only to have another Hacker group (LulzSec) compromise their SonyPictures servers and steal 1,000,000 customer accounts. It turns out that these accounts weren’t even encrypted! What are the qualifications for getting a job in their IT Security Dep’t.? Knowing how to boil water without burning it? You can see the hackers’ stateme...

If I don’t succeed in getting the YouTube Vid into this, the vid and article appear on Lifehacker’s  homepage . It poses a very interesting question… what’s going to happen to skinning with the advent of Windows 8 on PC’s? You see, There isn’t a Start Menu and taskbar, nor traditional windows. There’s a Start Page, and basically a Smart Phone interface with tiles and the weather tile appears to be a widget. So what do you think?...

The good Lantec has sent in an excellent tip he noticed for WC’ers. Google Gmail Labs announced: “Today we’re excited to graduate three more features from the experimental testing ground of Gmail Labs. Superstars, Nested Labels, and Advanced IMAP Controls are now first-class citizens in the Gmail world, thanks largely to your feedback. We’re also retiring the Google Search box lab which was redundant with the “Search the Web” button that’s already in Gmail.” –...

Caught this fresh out of Oslo…. Opera’s newest entry in the browser game is “ Opera Now ”. Looks the same, so what’s new? Password sync, a revamped speed dial that: “Now, in Opera Swordfish, those screens can actually show dynamic widgets, so, as Opera notes, those screens can show a snapshot from a weather-forecasting page - or, if it's programmed appropriately, that screen can show you a personalized weather report. Opera also improved Opera Link, the serv...

A sting operation has revealed a possible way to really hurt the networks, factories and biggies of pirated software and spam. Purchases were made, and the money was tracked: “One bank alone was used to settle more than 60 percent of all transactions, and the top three banks—Azerigazbank in Azerbaijan, St Kitts & Nevis Anguilla National Bank in St Kitts &Nevis, and Danish-owned DnB Nord in Latvia—together accounted for more than 95 percent of all money paid to spam v...

Was going to have a nap. Then Hankers pm’d me about this. Thanks, Hank. Bye, nap. Clever little hackers. Mac users got Mac Defender/Mac Guard. Windows users got the same (before them). Now, when you click on the wrong thing, or on the wrong website (get some sniffing extensions, please!) this will pop up on you: picture from TheWindowsClub If you click on the “Start Protection” button, malware will be installed on your computer and it will “sc...

Island Dog just alerted me about malware Android users are being potentially exposed to: “Between 30,000 and 120,000 users of Android devices are believed to have been affected by new mobile malware which has its roots in the earlier scourge known as Droid Dream. Like its predecessor, this variant, called Droid Dream Light, appears to have been created by the same developers whose malware had infected over 50 applications back in March . According to Lookout Security ,...

This from The Windows Club : Firstly, this isn’t antiviral software and isn’t meant to take the place of your antivirus. Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Beta is a recovery tool that can help you start an infected PC and perform an offline scan to help identify and remove rootkits and other advanced malware. It can also be used if you are unable to start or install an antivirus solution on your PC because it creates a bootable disk. Also, if your installed an...

This one caught my eye because not only is it free, it updates it’s info from net and pc savvy users who seem to be very active in their Forums giving advice regarding not only the software, but the latest info about services and toolbars. This ranges from older to the ‘hot off the presses’. It’s less than a month old, and has 62,837 active members. You can see software ratings from the homepage. In addition to the optimizer, it has a file shredder, Cleaner, Uninstaller, and a H...

Discovered in wandering around ghacks, I decided to take a look at this Utility (I’m a sucker for them) which Martin Brinkmann reviewed. Remember how fast your computer was when you first bought it? Cleaning and optimizing the Registry speeds up the Boot process. If you’ve never done it, and if you’ve installed and uninstalled software, you might see quite a difference. This Utility will clean, compact (optimize) and fix Registry problems (safely). If you decide to use it, then...

"Small. Really small." MicroPointing's CEO Ailon Tamir, “One square millimeter.” “The mouse in question is the one which will be replacing the "four-way rocker" used to control menus, functions, and other features of mobile phones.   There is a great deal of competition for space on a mobile device’s surface, which of course is very limited. The old-fashioned rocker-style mouse used by most devices today, which measures 35 millimeters...

Denis Wong (Neowin.net) has just published an article about this malware removal tool which will be offered by Apple to remove the Mac Defender Trojan-Virus I told you about in “Apple Barrel 2”. This will not prevent, although it gives advice on how to avoid infection. screenshots from Neowin.net Link to articles: http://www.neowin.net/news/apple-to-offer-mac-os-x-update-to-remove-mac-defender https://forums.wincustomize.com/408852   ...
