Ramblings of an old Doc

On my computer

Happy Saturday! It’s my pleasure to introduce to those of you who haven’t met, “File Repair”.

We’ve all had souring experiences with file corruption due to unexpected power failure, network interruption, virus infection, network sharing and application errors. This utility fixes them all.

It will fix the following types of errors: ‘file is not in a recognizable format’, ‘unable to read file’, ‘file cannot be accessed’, ‘application cannot open the type of file represented by filename’, ‘out of memory errors’, or ‘low system resources errors’.

Types of files it can repair:

“corrupted Word documents (.doc, .docx, .docm, .rtf)
corrupted Excel spreadsheets (.xls, .xla, .xlsx)
corrupted Zip or RAR archives (.zip, .rar)
corrupted videos (.avi, .mp4, .mov, .flv, .wmv, .asf, .mpg)
corrupted JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, PNG or RAW images (.jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .tiff, .bmp, .png)
corrupted PDF documents (.pdf)
corrupted Access databases (.mdb, .mde, .accdb, .accde)
corrupted PowerPoint presentations (.ppt, .pps, .pptx)
corrupted music (.mp3, .wav)” – File Repair Website

This is pretty good, especially for free.

But seeing as it is Doc....wouldn't it be spasm??

Anyhow, Doc, me old buddy, me old pal, thanks for the find and posting it here.  This will be an invaluable tool as I attempt to salvage old family [that's the entire extended family] videos from way back when and turn them into AVI's, MP4's, etc.  On occasion I have come across damaged or corrupt files, so now I'll be able to extract those previously unsalvageable files.

That makes it all worthwhile, mate. Thanks. So glad I may have helped!

You might take a look at the undelete360 post. You never know when you'll need it...

You might take a look at the undelete360 post. You never know when you'll need it...

I have 360Undelete.... another brilliant app that has saved my bacon on more than one occasion

Another one that I recently got put onto is Everything search engine.  My sister found it in the FreeApps program after I had complained that the search function in Win 7 is pretty much useless and found very little.  To prove my point, I could see various files on an external drive yet Windows Search returned no results.  That never happens with Everything... and if you're dealing with multiple drives, like I often am. it is a blessing.

Several family members each have a 2TB Seagate external drive for video storage, etc, and often I'll have up to 4 plugged in at once as I edit/convert/transfer family videos, and in a situation like that, Win 7's search has proved to be as useless as tits on a bull.  I knew that I had converted a particular file and even recalled what I'd named it, but do you think Win Search could find it later when I had accidentally moved it to a wrong folder.  Nope, not a hope... but thanks to Everything I was able to eventually locate it... which BTW was far, far removed - not even on the same drive - from where I thought I had put it.

Thanks for making this available, old friend. I have Directory Opus which has a great search option in it, so I don't need it - but for the readers, thanks a bushel. And a heap.

Thanks starkers...know what you mean about Win search. It sucks.

@Doc...checked out DOpus and found it ain't no freebie. Besides I have one, don't remember the name or on what drive I put it, but it does everything I need it to do and it beats the hell out of explorer. It shows your four panes that you can reconfigure. Now where did I put it? Hmmmm

Oh....and I went for undelete360 too. Cause ya never know.

You're most welcome, Doc, as are all the other readers who find it useful.  It's not often that I contribute along these lines, being most things I discover are pretty well known here anyway, but I like to help out when I can.

You're welcome, bud... hopefully you'll receive great benefit from it as well.  I did a search last night for things I thought had been lost for ever, and was surprised at how many things Everything found in folders and places I'd forgotten about.  For some of it, I had even done am Undelete360 search, thinking I may have accidentally deleted it.  Like Durrr, Freddy, it might have found something if you had deleted in the first place.

I have a 500gb internal storage drive that I use for photos, documents, program installers and to backup my skins library, etc, and not that I remember putting this stuff there, but lo and behold, there's all these video clips and the like... hiding in folders intended for different file types/uses.  Now 500gb might sound big by today's standards, what with 2 terabyters and all, but it is like a bottomless pit if you have to search it manually because you've lost something and Win search is as useless as dentures to a newborn.

Do you think these software developers create such useful,,, er, essential proggies with forgetful old farts like me in mind?

starkers
dentures to a newborn.

Well, just when I thought I'd heard them all, leave it to the Capt'n to come up with a new one.

No, Uvah. It's expensive...for that reason I haven't gone to the newest version, either... not that much new. It's the top of the line, though: Really the very best. An Ozzie company, to boot.
