If you’d like a chance to win, head over to ghacks.net . It’s an excellent piece of software which you can configure to run automatically or just on demand. It has lots of tools (more than 20) and features. For a good, in depth review head on over. You can configure the Antivirus component as a first line of defense or in ‘compatibility’ mode and it will update to latest definitions during installation. If you already have an antiviral you&rsqu...
This comes from Mary Jo Foley (a very dependable source) who wrote in her ZDnet blog : Users will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 (the name of the entry-level consumer version of the operating system) from Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic and Windows 7 Home Premium while maintaining their existing Windows settings, personal files and applications. Users will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro from Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windo...
You might remember I told you about “Project Glass” back in April of this year. Well, it’s undergone development (as predicted) and at the annual San Francisco Conference for Developers, Google will be selling the glasses at a mere $1,500 per pair. Of course the price will come down (this prototype thing is a “bragging rights”/novelty thing for ultra-geeks, but the danger of these devices will grow, not decline with popularity. “Isabelle Olsson, an engineer on th...
As you all know, Rainmeter is a very popular customization program. Many of the skins can record your notes, to-do lists, launch and control your fave apps… which can be arranged to your liking. So… just thought I’d mention seeing the update/release notice on Neowin.net . You can pick it up here: http://rainmeter.net/cms/ What’s changed? Read about it here: http://rainmeter.net/cms/Release23 but at first glance, it looks like lots of chang...
Thanks for the tip, Hank. The latest version of Firefox (ff13) has an unintended problem (which Mozilla will fix). I don't know if the problem exists in the latest Pale Moon build, however. To those who use it, you'd best check. The update from June 5th included updates the Home and new tab pages. If you haven’t updated since before June 5th, you’ll probably be wise to keep waiting until Mozilla patches this problem. You see, Firefox takes snaps of the 13 p...
Gamers have solved knotty problems in structural chemistry (chemotherapy, specifically) because of their enhanced 3D recognition and problem solving abilities. So why not use technology to help teach the basics of Physics? All I ever had was free hand drawings of vectors… but now, “Puzzle Maker” enables teachers and students to bring lessons and puzzles to each other and craft solutions. Seems like “meh”, but it isn’t. In crafting solutions, stud...
We’ve all seen pics of the Surface. Now (from c|net ) pictures and some specs on the W8 phone: There are a bunch of pics and a vid on the c|net site. Features: Multicore – will support up to 64 core processors… but definitely will support dual and quad cores. Three new screen resolutions – WVGA (800x480), WXVGA (1280x768) and “true 720p” (1280x720p) Will share code with desktop ie10 and the browsers will ...
Well, sorry to bring this news. If you have a Visa or Mastercard, you’d better check if your name appears on the “S-List”. Interestingly, This “Jeremy” or “Reckz0r” claims to have hacked 79 banking companies and obtained 50 Gb of data, and published some as proof (on Pastebin). He received tweets that this is stuff that appeared on that site 2 weeks before… which doesn’t mean more than “Hacking still has occurred, yo...
Well it’s as easy as it could be. Some of these are my screenies and some are Mark Kaelin’s. 1. Right click on an empty part of your task bar. Unlock it (if it’s locked). 2. Click “New toolbar”. 3. In the destination box, type in: %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch . You can always remove IE later if you want, and substitute whichever files or programs you wish. 4. Ta-da! One Quick Lau...
Every time I see a .NET update, I clutch. I admit it. Ask WebGizmos what happens with a bad .NET update/installation. We were on the phone for hours. From then on he refused to update. I don’t blame him. Before trying to update/install .NET 4.0 (W7 SP1 comes with .NET 3.5) run the following: sfc /scannow as Administrator. If your system files have become corrupted, that could cause problems. If you have installed and are running into problems, do the following: Click on S...
OK. Generally speaking, updates are a good thing. Especially MS security updates. In a sense, many updates address just that by plugging holes in the original software, fixing exploitable script. However, as many have seen with .NET and Flash updates (there are others which have caused problems as well), updates can break things – causing crashes and freezes. This is why many test updates in a virtual environment before allowing updates to actually install. You ...
No surprise, really. It’s an election year. Turns out MS and Yahoo have been selling your name, Zip code, and other info you provided when signing up for their services, and buying habits in order to provide targeted advertising to the political parties. The parties can then match voter records to people’s online identities and send them targeted ads. They profile you. They have succeeded in invading your privacy yet again. I can’t help but wonder if th...
I read it and laughed. IE7? Who on earth uses IE7? Apparently “Kogan” customers, if you can believe this one. Kogan is an Australian online only retailer. Apparently, IE7 doesn’t render their webpages particularly well so, Kogan has decided to charge a 6.8% “surcharge” on customers using IE7 because of the time necessary to create code “work arounds”. Kogan’s sees this as a mission to eliminate the browser from the 1.3% of Australians still using it. The Kogan rep was ...
Got an email, so I cruised over to take a peek. Good stuff listed. Good to take a look at here: http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/best-windows-software#image If you need something specific, it’s categorized by software type. Fences comes up #1 in Productivity. I was surprised by the choice of Rocket Dock, though. Object Dock and Nexus both work better for me, and are supported by continuing development. Enjoy!
The software affected in this update: Windows (XP SP3, Vista, 7, Server 2003/2008) Windows Remote Desktop Internet Explorer .NET Framework Windows Lync Microsoft Dynamics AX Enterprise Portal Several will require a restart. The majority of the patches are for IE vulnerabilities, so they are important. Source: http://www.neowin.net/news/patch-tuesday-microsoft-fixing-27-vulnerabilities
