Ramblings of an old Doc

We’ve all seen pics of the Surface. Now (from c|net) pictures and some specs on the W8 phone:

There are a bunch of pics and a vid on the c|net site.

Features:

    • Multicore – will support up to 64 core processors… but definitely will support dual and quad cores.
    • Three new screen resolutions – WVGA (800x480), WXVGA (1280x768) and “true 720p” (1280x720p)
    • Will share code with desktop ie10 and the browsers will be very similar. It will be very secure, such as reputation based phishing detector and SmartScreen Filter.
    • Will support MicroSD cards therefore will get a 16, 32, or perhaps 64GB of extra memory, as well as another way to transfer data.
    • New scree – entirely occupied by tiles of 3 sizes (depending on the app)… of which MS states currently more than 100,000.
    • Customization – tile colors and themes.
    • No upgrade of W7 to W8 phone OS will be possible (they want to sell stuff, right?).
    • NFC and mobile wallet – will have, and Chase will be a partner.
    • W8 phone and desktop/Surface will share W8 code for devs.
    • Seamless Skype, in app purchases, W8 desktop security level, development in C and C++.

Well, I can see it on a phone or tablet, probably work just fine.  But definitely NOT on a desktop PC.

All the 'swiping' business will probably 'get old' really quickly.

to late, to little, to unoriginal. And from MS who brought us the most awful hardware over the course of the last decades. Sure i am going to pay MS tax on my mobilephone when i can get a perfectly working OS free of charge.

So in order to compete they either have to make a loss on the OS or skimp on the hardware. What would MS do? I know, skimp on the hardware quality. C chips come very cheap.
