We know about the devices we don’t want to ‘disappear’… pacemakers, shunts, heart valves, insulin pumps and the like. Well, there will be monitoring devices (not far off at all) which will be implanted at surgery, or via scopes which will monitor temperature, sugar… (and more being developed) which can be ‘programmed’ to last a week, two weeks or longer… and then just dissolve harmlessly. They’re made of inexpensive, n...

Saw something which looks very useful on Neowin.net if you’re trying to find a driver or trying to analyze a BSOD dump. This site can help… and it’s a good url to have in your “Repair kit” if you’re the “go to” guy for computer problems. It looks like it can save a heck of a lot of time. It looks very easy to use…   Let me know how well it works if you try it out…   Link:   ...

As the title says… opens a lot of possibilities… educational (asking questions as you watch might help teach topics), or reinforcing advertising. Once activated, the question prompt brings you to a new “prompt" menu” to take you to a page to add more questions. They can be in pretty much any format. A Dutch site tried testing this (WebSonic.nl) said that when they inputted questions, the add-ons failed to display.   You can try it yourself ...

Truly unfortunate… this is an excellent site. It puts out two products: Free and paid subscriptions. The paid subscription is top drawer as the subscription fee pays top experts for excellent articles. The free part of the site is very good. Well, on 9/19/12 the site was hacked by ‘brute forcing’ an admin account. The following data might have been stolen: “subscriber name, e-mail address, reader number, ZIP code (if applicable), geographic region, and hashed password —...

Well, MS took down Nitol, a huge botnet which sold counterfeit software, and hosted over 70,000 malware domains which infected users with more than 500 Trojans, viruses and keystroke loggers. It was done as part of the M.A.R.S. (Microsoft Active Response for Security) which tracked down evildoers whose intent was to harm the world online community. This Op (Operation b70) was started by the Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit. Nitol has existed since 2008. “Our research into Nito...

Hi again… thought I’d tell you all about a really exciting bit of research coming out of the University of Sheffield and Srinakharinwirot University in Thailand. Stem cells are cells which have the potential to generate more specialized, organ specific cells. Deafness can be caused by many reasons, but among them is the loss of sensory hair cells in the Cochlea of the ear. The ear looks like this. The organ in the ear which we’re discussing is the Cochlea, the ...

OK… something happened to your computer and/or you need its specs. But the writing has worn off those tags, or they’ve come off. What do you do? You have “ Speccy ” from Piriform (the same folks who brought you CCleaner , Recuva and Defraggler ). “Isn't this information in Windows? Yes and no. Some of the basic information can be found by right-clicking My Computer and then clicking Properties. The General tab lists some statistics, ...

Things are getting more and more obnoxious. You buy a Kindle Fire HD ($199 7” version, $299 8.9” version), you also get advertising on the lock screen and at the bottom of the home screen for books, movies TV shows and (of course) Amazon products. If you opt to pay $15 more, these ads will be disabled. Sort of like someone blasting music (at a legal hour) but if you pay him, he’ll turn the volume down. Another form of a protection racket. Amazon says few people ch...

JavaRa 2.0 is a tiny, excellent app to help you manage your Java, troubleshoot it or just have a more comfortable way to update it. It’s also good if you need to remove Java but can’t use the official Oracle Java Uninstaller. After installing, you can move a shortcut to a bin, Fence or dock so it’s readily available. It’s made by SingularLabs who are the same folks who gave us System Ninja and CCEnhancer (which expands the definitions of CCleaner). It does require .NET to...

This really isn’t “Personal Computing”, but I don’t think the appropriate Forum cross posts from JU. However, I’m not going to try to figure it out. Honestly, I’ve waited for this for a decade… more… since college, really. I’d been waiting for the weekend to publish this. I can’t. It’s too big. It is to Medicine what “Dark Matter” is to modern physics. Medicine has been progressing rapidly, but no ...

For the digital artists… a very good program. Five thoushand brushes, layers, media, cloning, tracing, masks, particles, tablet support (drawing tablet, that is), scanner support, dynamic palettes and more. It’ll run on all versions of Windows.   As you can see, usually it’s $99…. today? Free. Go for it. At worst you’ll hate it and CClean it. Per the website, 759 folks want this deal.   Ok, Oracle. I’ve had it with you. Thank G-d for Martin Brinkmann and gHacks.net. Just finished my postprandial nap, and went to my email only to discover the above. Turns out that since April, 2012 The Poland based company, “Security Explorations” has notified Oracle about 29 vulnerabilities. Since the patch, this company discovered yet another vulnerability which allows a breach in the Java’s sandbox. Two of these vulnerabilities have been exploited in...
