Ramblings of an old Doc

A pretty sound bet is Auslogics… for many utilities.

The Good:

Disk Defrag Pro is another in this series of excellent apps. You can run it four different ways, depending on your specific needs.

  • Defragments system files (MFT, pagefile, hiberfil, etc.) so that your operating system will start up faster;
  • Offers a choice of 4 disk optimization algorithms that let you tailor the program to your specific needs;
  • Not only defrags, but prevents further fragmentation with free space consolidation and intelligent file placement;
  • Uses special algorithms for SSD and VSS-enabled drives to prevent disk wear or loss of restore points;
  • Offers extended scheduling options that let you set defragmentation and optimization tasks for when it is convenient for you;
  • Shows detailed reports and performance charts so that you can see everything the program does and how it influences your PC’s performance.
  • Boot defrag (usually overlooked by Windows).
  • Setup for Temp file removal and checking disk for errors.
  • Limit program resource usage, or lift them for faster action, depending on what you’re doing.

The really interesting feature here is that it offers special algorithms for SSD and VSS-enabled drives to prevent disk wear or loss of restore points.

Another nice feature is the detailed reporting of what the program did and how it will influence your PC’s performance.

The Bad:

One thing I found disconcerting: At the end of the installation, you’ll be directed to a page at the Auslogics site. You enter your name and email and all I got was a small pink square (no key).

In the software (when opened) there is a rectangle which states “You have a 30 days of your 30 day trial left)."

I did email their support and described the situation and they promise an email in 2-4 days. Also disconcerting is the statement on the Auslogics page that the license is good for one year. After that year, it’s not clear what happens.

My conclusion: “Caveat emptor”. I’ll stick with my “Smart Defrag 2” for the meantime.

*As always with any GOTD:

1. If you format, you won’t get the software back.

2. No free technical support.

3. No free upgrades to future versions.

4. Strictly personal usage.

5. Unzip the package you've downloaded, and carefully read the instructions which you can find in the readme.txt file. This readme.txt file is included with downloads. Follow the instructions carefully to install and activate the software.

6. Create a "restore Point" before installing any software to your computer. Always choose the "Custom" or "Advanced" option for installation to avoid installing "Tool bars" and home page/search engine switchers.

Like you Doc I'll stick to Smart Defrag 2. It does what I need it to do. No fuss, no bother.

Not to disparage the software, but while it appears very flexible, It really didn't look like it would work in the background... the wizard is very simple, but doesn't have that in its options... and one would seem to have to get through many menus to find what you wanted, and then have to change it when resources were needed for something else... just seems like a good deal of trouble.

Thanks for your in depth research on this free download.            Like Uvah, I shall remain with tried and true.

I have been an avid user of Auslogics Boostspeed which includes the defrag and I can say that it does work in the background. Can't say so for the stand alone version though.

Sadly, Give away of the day started using a different wrapper for their giveaways. This started in July, IIRC. It has been nothing but trouble, with many, many complaints about registration errors, hung/failed installs, etc. I don't even bother with the site anymore, except to see if the situation has been rectified.

The software given away today is well worth trying out, but going through GAOTD to do so isn't worth  the effort.

P.S. Another happy Smart Defrag2 user.
