If I had known about this file manager and if it had been as advanced as Directory Opus was back in 2008 (when I invested in it), I might not have gone with Directory Opus. Well, from what I can see, it now is, and can do pretty much everything I need DOpus to do…and for free. It has so many features, I really don’t know where to begin. So I’ll use their list. Layout Dual Panel Tabs Commander styled keyboard/mouse setup Windows Explorer styled keyboard...

The first edition got great reviews back in 2008…now, it’s 2.0.2, seven years later for 32 and 64 bit systems. The big difference? Image completion technology…what Adobe calls “Content aware fill”. It also supports video images. The newest of the new? The editor supports new projections and allows you to take a 360 degree panorama and turn it into a little planet image which also supports ‘auto completion’ (“Content aware”) ...

Since we’re coming up on tax time, I thought this review I found about receipt management software might help…if not this year, then next. It appears here: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-apps-for-managing-your-receipts/?tag=nl.e059&s_cid=e059&ttag=e059&ftag=TRE4e2523d The reviewer chose “Receipts” (Tidal Pool Software) from the 5 apps looked at, because it doesn’t require you to create an account…just start using straight away. Also ...

“SAN FRANCISCO —Millions of Anthem health insurance customers woke Thursday morning to an e-mail from the company telling them hackers had gained access to the company's computers and that their names, birthdays, Social Security numbers, addresses and employment data including income might have been stolen. "Anthem will individually notify current and former members whose information has been accessed. We will provide credit monitoring and identity protection free o...

Well, there must be the gnashing of teeth and moaning in the inner sanctums of telcos and ISPs (probably Congress, as well): The Chairman of the FCC has come down supporting the classification of the internet as a Title II public utility (which it truly is), and the FCC will relate to it as such. This means the business interests of the telco/ISPs will come second to those of the public, and that there will be no further receiving subsidies they receive to maintain net neutrality, wh...

On Neowin, this just popped up…but they’re only for those running W10 Tech Preview. Versions for Windows Tablets and phones will be coming pretty soon, as well. “The apps, as you would expect since they are in the 'preview' state, are free with Word weighing in at 87MBs, Excel at 79.8 MBs, and PowerPoint at 77.8 MBs. Also, the apps work on x86/x64 and ARM devices.” – Neowin These apps are very important to W10 as Android and iOS have touch versions of Office ...

Remember I told you about ‘header enrichment’ (enrichment for the companies using these privacy invaders) -  it was back a couple of weeks ago: here ? Well, good news. Because of all the fire Verizon took from privacy advocates (because of the tracking…always with the story “We do it to improve content and service”) it will now allow users to opt out of their obnoxious spying through the use of the “supercookies”. “However,...

First of all, ‘broadband’ is one thing and ‘baseband’ is another. As defined in the Wiki: “ broadband is wide bandwidth data transmission with an ability to simultaneously transport multiple signals and traffic types. The medium can be coaxial cable, optical fiber, twisted pair, or wireless broadband (wireless broadband includes Mobile broadband). In contrast, baseband describes a communication system in which information is transported across a sin...

W10 doesn’t appeal to me esthetically, but none of MS’s OSs have, so that’s no biggy – or at least not a new biggy. Anyway, lots of folks seem really happy about “free W10”. That would be W7 and W8.1 users, I guess (because MS hasn’t specifically said) and 8, RT, Vista and XP users are SOL. “Microsoft said that certain existing "qualified" Windows users will be able to upgrade for free to the new software. But it didn't define ...

Just to be an “equal opportunity revealer”, Google has published Apple’s security flaws in Yosemite. Google says it notified Apple back in October 2014 of three flaws (one of which Apple has mitigated) and true to form, published them 90 days later. So, MS isn’t Google’s only victim. Apple says the other fixes are in beta testing and should be out in a 10.10.2 update “soon”, when it goes into general availability. Again I ask, what’s the rush to publish this stuff wh...

The Cubs announced Ernies' death Friday night, but did not provide a cause…it doesn’t really matter why (just hope it was without pain). No drama player…19 seasons between first base and shortstop, 1953-1971, 512 homers, 1,259 games. Eleven timers an all-star, also selected for the All-Century team in 1999. That kinda says it all…except that he owns just about all the Cubs’ slugging records, and also won the Golden Glove in 1960. Wa...

Or, a tale of two choices. “The bug involves the way user privilege levels are set within the operating system. It appears that anyone with authorized access to a Windows computer is able to create an ordinary user account, and then 'trick' Windows into elevating the account with administrator privileges. The attack can easily be pulled off by remote or locally and can result in significant damage, including but not limited to: malware infection, identify theft, and acc...

“Verizon users might want to start looking for another provider. In an effort to better serve advertisers, Verizon Wireless has been silently modifying its users' web traffic on its network to inject a cookie-like tracker. This tracker, included in an HTTP header called X-UIDH, is sent to every unencrypted website a Verizon customer visits from a mobile device. It allows third-party advertisers and websites to assemble a deep, permanent profile of visitors' web browsing habits wi...
