I first wrote about this bit of nastiness here: http://drjbhl.joeuser.com/article/457404/CryptoWall_Ramsomware_has_hit_600K_computers_and_a_new_gem_TorrentLocker It was so named because its configuration resides in the Windows Registry in HKCU\Software\Bit Torrent Application\Configuration. It’s real name is Win32/Filecoder.DI Everyone thought, “Whew! Dodged that one: I don’t use Torrents!”. Think again. “A TorrentLocker infection, like other ransomware schemes (...

The latest Windows Update is causing a range of problems: “KB 3004394 blocks the installation or update of graphics drivers such as AMD’s new Catalyst Omega. Nvidia users are also reporting difficulty installing GeForce drivers.” – Jason Evangelho It has been recommended to remove it manually. and MS agrees. What other problems does it cause? “USB 3.0 drivers are broken and User Account Control (UAC) prompts have gone haywire. Microsoft has ackno...

Came across a really good “how to” article at gizmo’s freeware: http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-harden-your-browser-against-malware-and-privacy-concerns.htm#Instructions_For_Chromium_Browsers The nice part is that it’s written in non geek English, and links to “ How to stay safe online ” and “ How to protect your online privacy ”…another two very good articles. The article discusses the main browsers, as well as some of their better known variants. It discuss...

It’s not bad…it isn’t Snagit, or Snap 7, but it has lots of possibilities for use and secondary functions as well as tools, if only for static shots. You can get a look at its description, features, etc. here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ShareX and view a plethora of screen shots in a light box from here: http://getsharex.com/ . It has a very simple GUI with drop down menus…and to learn where to find the major things shouldn’t take all tha...

Some pretty minor changes…GUI became flat, but the layout is unchanged (whew!). Biggest change is the ability to manage and/or uninstall Chrome extensions – Tools>Startup>Google Chrome. Might be a bit faster…hard to tell. You can find it here: https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds

It’s free, it’s easy…anyone can ‘optimize’ or manipulate any image with it. The software works with every Windows OS. No special talent required…it’s nothing like Photoshop…or Lightroom. It has a limited number of adjustments and some presets, like instagram. The controls are simple…an explorer to open the images, crop, rotate, contrast and brightness and change width or height of the image in the top row to the right ...

And it’s an exe…portable, doesn’t require installation, but does require you to disconnect from a network and the net while scanning, to avoid false positives. Size: 26 mb. Also, it won’t detect every program known to man…so if you think you’re being surveilled, check the screenies to see where to get more help. Generally, journalists and bloggers use the tool routinely, and it was developed by the Amnesty International, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Digitale Gesellsc...

Since many of you (or at least some) use Avast!, I thought I’d let you know that I just saw this. In Reddit, Avast Forum and Mozilla ZZine, there are many reports that the latest Avast is deleting FF add-ons, apparently at start up without any option to stop the deletion. It isn’t linked to the Avast’s “Browser Cleanup” tool. The exact cause is at this point unclear. The issues are confirmed by some users but not noticed by others. The only common denominator is that all affecte...

A great utility has been redesigned. It has a new interface in the popular ‘flat style’. The 5.0 Beta has just the interface change, but more changes are coming over the next week. You can expect the RTM at the end of the month. You can read more and get the download here: http://www.piriform.com/blog/2014/11/14/ccleaner-v50-is-now-available-in-beta

Yes…get used to the idea, because you’re going to be seeing them. This is a good lesson in economics and evolution. This decision came along with the launch of Ff 33.1, or should it now be called AdFox? The ads will appear in the form of Tiles in the new tabs page which is used to show your most visited sites (by frequency and recentness): Google is the major source of FF’s funding, your default search engine has been Google…unless you changed it. It has...
