Ramblings of an old Doc

Not interesting in bashing…only in influencing a few consciences and perhaps buying patterns, because nothing changes minds like smaller profits.

You no doubt remember the anti-suicide netting and Foxconn from 2010. Apple issued strict standards and inspections, and that fixed that, right?

Wrong. BBC Panorama has revealed:

“An undercover investigation by BBC Panorama reveals that workers in Chinese factories which make Apple products have been discovered to being treated poorly; filming on an iPhone 6 production line revealed Apple's promises to protect workers were routinely broken.”- Neowin

Apple refused to be interviewed for the program and issued a non-response:

"We are aware of no other company doing as much as Apple to ensure fair and safe working conditions."

"We work with suppliers to address shortfalls, and we see continuous and significant improvement, but we know our work is never done." – Apple

“Our work is never done.” Indeed.

Pegatron (the factory involved) has responded: "Worker safety and well-being are our top priorities. We set very high standards, conduct rigorous training for managers and workers, and have external auditors regularly visiting our facilities to find areas for improvement," a statement said in the BBC source.

The BBC did a real job (for a change). They went all the way down the supply and production line to the tin mining in Indonesia. It found children digging tin ore out by hand in extremely dangerous conditions. The miners can be buried alive when the walls of sand or mud collapse. A father and his twelve year old son were also interviewed.

“Johan Murod, who runs one of the smelters on Apple's list, said 70% of the tin that is exported comes from the small-scale mines. "At the smelter there's everything from both large and small scale mines. It's all mixed. There's no way to know what is legal and what is illegal." – BBC

I recommend reading the Neowin/BBC sources and viewing the video.

We work with suppliers to address shortfalls

VERY unfortunate turn of phrase when there's mention of suicide catch-netting....

Perhaps Apple has a comedy department....

Another reason why Apple is despicable... only this time for serious.  My thread: "And Another Reason Why Apple IS Despicable" was intended to be a bit of Apple bashing for fun, but this is far more serious and not a fun/joking matter. So yeah, Apple is despicable and should be held to account for its crimes against humanity, namely Chinese/Asian workers

For mine, Apple has such a poor track record across the board that it should be dismantled and its inventory of products spread across several smaller, independent companies to ensure it never again becomes so powerful that even judges are afraid of it.

Also, any current, pending and future legal proceedings begun by Apple should be hit on the head and dismissed as egotistical grabs at other companies IP, because frankly, Apple is not the innovative, inventive genius it claims to be, but has merely used other peoples tech to further its own cause.

Honestly, I'd like to see China kick Apple out; for Taiwan to say "not here thank you"; and for S Korea to tell Apple there is NO room for it there.  After that there are probably no other manufacturing nations big enough to cope with the demand, bar the UK, Russia and some in Europe, but at too high a cost, which may then mean that Apple must return to the US, thus boosting US employment and its home economy rather than plundering other national economies by evading taxes, exploiting cheap resources and disadvantaged workers in Asia, ect.

And no, this isn't Apple bashing... this is me expressing my total disgust for a totally contemptible, unethical company.

As for buying Apple products... never in a fechen million years.  I still have some principles [spelt the proper English way]

And China as well. Let's not forget their responsibility to their citizens.

Yes, China must shoulder some of the blame, and yes, show greater responsibilty to ALL its citizens.  As I said in the other thread, emerging economies generally do not adhere to the best practices, and China is an emerging economy that is following in the footsteps of Britain, Europe and other 1st world nations as they were developing.  Now this does not absolve China [or anyone else for that matter], but Apple is clearly flaunting the realms of human decency when it should know better as a member of the 1st world.  That to me makes Apple far more culpable and certainly guilty of human rights violations.

Anyway, me old mate, 'tis way past my bedtime and I'm calling it a night... in the early hours of the morning.
