For the Ps fans… have you ever seen that one super brush which would be perfect for your project… but it’s “for cs3 and later”, while you’re using Ps 7? Have you wanted a better display of your treasured brushes, or are you considering which you really need and use to clean out junk that’s slowing Ps down? Well, I found this gem this morning: abrMate. It’s free and as far as I can see, there’s no other utility around which does what it does: Open and previe...

Koop informed me that this is available for free, and it’s no less (except Backup from Snapshot) than the $40 version. It has a full range of features which you can view here: http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/comparison.htm and screen shots which you can review here: http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/comparison.htm It’s an excellent, and free utility to have and use . So get into the habit of backing up your stuff and saving a whole lot of...

Neowin just published about a Swedish company (Tobii) which has invented a tool to make Windows 8 much cooler (though regrettably not any prettier). If you watch the video, you’ll see that this tool is used in conjunction with a mouse or touchpad. Also, it could probably be used with a Wacom type device.   This device will be demo’d at CES 2012 at the MS booth. So, to launch an app, just look (or gaze) at it and touch the pad… poof!   I read a frightening article sent by Hankers, yesterday. “Japan reportedly has paid Fujitsu $2.3 million to build a self-replicating assassin squad -- a computer virus it can set loose in the network to track down and eliminate other viruses…The government agency in charge of weapons development paid the heavy industries firm $2.3 million (178.5 million Yen) to create a virus that can analyze cyberattacks and even identify their source.” - http://www.foxnews.c...

Ran across these goodies in an article on Devgarage today. Haven’t evaluated them yet, but some seem quite robust, and for folks who can’t afford Photoshop, or its equivalents, seems these could be of interest…. Should be good on older machines which might not have the resources necessary to run big programs and RAM hogs like Ps (when you have lots of fonts and layers). I’d like to hear back how you folks feel about them, if you decide to try them. Aviary isn’t bad (as far ...

Many times I see forum posts about problems caused by Windows 7, or other software being blamed on Stardock software. I also see yrag being called on for help. He’s a great Community resource, but obviously can’t always be expected to be there or (please don’t kill me, yrag) necessarily solve those problems. As with any super complex piece of software, things can go wrong (or be made to go wrong). Also, Windows has a wide selection of tools to help figure out wh...

Normally I’d say, “Take your time and don’t hurry with .NET updates.” This one is the exception. You have to figure it’s important if MS engineers sacrifice their Christmas to put an out-of-band security update out there. Out-of-band updates involve typically address very high risk vulnerabilities to risks prevalent on the net. This update is rated “Critical” for a DoS vulnerability. “Yesterday evening, we published an Advanced Notification alerting customers to a...

“Whaaaaat?”, you must be asking yourself as you read the title. Hopefully, it’ll suck you in to read the article. Darwin proposed several mechanisms to explain the diversity of life as he observed it and his travels sought the evidence for them. Had he and Mendel been contemporaneous… well. He proposed “Descent with Modification” and its main causative mechanism, “Natural Selection” (NS). Well, Darwin came before antibiotics, antivirals and Windows 8. Parallel to “Natural S...

So, you want to make a back up copy of all your “Rescue Tools”, great music, art, etc. so you can utilize it for another purpose. Say you want to make an image of your mp3 music player’s content and then mount each different style of music differently. But, you really don’t want to “Copy to” or “drag 'and drop”.  Say you really want an image (a clone) of the original. The free USB (and basiically any device connected as a USB device to your ‘puter) has t...

Stratfor is an open code US based security think tank. It evaluates present and future threats from open Internet sources. M.I.6/CIA/DIA this info isn’t. "The Stratfor hack is not the work of Anonymous. Stratfor is an open source intelligence agency, publishing daily reports on data collected from the open Internet. Hackers claiming to be Anonymous have distorted this truth in order to further their hidden agenda, and some Anons have taken the bait," the group clai...

Hey… Doc loves a freebie, especially a good one that’ll point out shortcomings in security and performance. So, it’s taken Symantec years to rehabilitate its name, and I read a review that really amazed me: Not in a good way either. AnandK (a regular reviewer at The Windows Club) wrote a review of this free tool made by Symantec, which you can read here: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/trust-norton-pc-checkup-tool In short, not good at all: It finds &ld...

Just read an interesting article about how things are really changing. Apple and other big players have their own venues to announce product launches and MS appears to be taking that route as well. Microsoft said it decided to pull out of the show after the January 2012 because it no longer fits company needs and its timing does not always mesh with product announcements.“We asked, ‘Are we doing something because it’s the right thing to do, or because it’s the way we’ve...

Tonight starts the celebration of Hanukkah. There have been several Forum posts, some humorous and some serious about the holiday. This is just a simple blessing to you folks…. May your homes and lives be filled with light and love.   My thoughts turn to the people who have gone, and those who are ill, in pain and finding little if any help or relief.   To everyone, but especially to these folks I wish light and love… I wish I could change your su...

No secret – I love to ‘edit’ photos. Another secret? Not everyone can afford Photoshop and various plugins to create ‘amazing’ art. Well, You might not create “amazing art”, but you will be able to do fun things to those holiday photos which you’re probably about to start shooting… How about a free piece of editing software which offers: Frames Change size You can add texts and other items while editing with PhotoScape Auto Contrast ...
