Peter Klein (MS CFO) discussed MS’s improved earnings with investors, and during that meeting revealed: “…we think of Surface as one part of the overall Windows 8 story. Certainly this quarter it was a contributing factor to the revenue growth in Windows Business. What it does is it highlights some interesting innovation that can happen to demonstrate the power of Windows 8 when tightly integrated hardware and software and new categories of devices, and where, obviously we h...

Every three years, the Copyright Office reviews the rules for unlocking and jailbreaking your phone as part of the review of rules that the DMCA mandates. This time they determined that there were enough unlocked phones for sale, and therefore unlocking your own without the permission of your carrier would be illegal. Proponents of unlocking argued that “some devices sold by carriers are permanently locked and because unlocking policies contain restrictions and ...

I admit it. I’m fascinated by these incredibly wide reaching criminal enterprises. From everything I’d read in the past about the location of botnet servers I’d thought most were outside the USA, and mainly in Asia: “In recent repot on Monsters and Critics, Symantec and their Security Threat Report, gained a lot of attention because of trends in botnets and their location. Those numbers showed that Asia had overtaken Britain as the leader in the volume of zombie computers.” ...

This is a totally free online service for file scanning. It utilizes 40 different antivirus engines to examine uploaded files. There are some very significant limitation on the scanning: The files you upload must be less than 32 Megabytes. If it is a zipped file, then its unzipped size must be less than 32 Mb. This can be overcome by using a file slitter. Also, the files to be scanned must be uploaded one at a time. This is understandable as there are resource limita...

You know the drill… Oracle doesn’t email anyone about Java updates, nor are “Reminders/Ads” about such an update on any webpage. If you see one, it is NOT from Oracle.   So… don’t download Java updates from anywhere but the Oracle website, and don’t use it unless you have vital software which needs it to work correctly. If you wish to see which of your programs are using it (look which are using say Jar2), download Process Explorer (Mark Russinovich) here...

It probably isn’t the best of the alternatives, but it’s a $30 value free today only. You can read about it and get it here:  http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/xyplorer-11-90/ One big minus with XYPlorer is the inability to get 2 panes for dragging and dropping. Remember: Make a restore point, don’t install it if you don’t need it, do some research and choose “Advanced” set up to avoid any tool bars, etc. Other alternatives are Xpl...

Whether or not you like it, Intel’s going to do it… especially with Windows 8. Don’t bother fighting it: “Resistance is futile.” Your choices will revolve around: Convertible: Like the Lenovo Yoga or the HP EliteBook Revolve have the swivel screens which don’t detatch and have the guts under the keyboard so these will be higher performance systems due to cooling. Detatchable: There are a host of these like HP’s Envy x2, and the Samsung ATIV Smart PC. If you want a ...

It’s a pretty rare event when DHS warns to disable the Java in your browser, but they have because of a Zero Day security flaw which allows infected applets to infect your computer via your browser and allow elevation of privileges to occur. Once this occurs, your computer will no longer keep your sensitive data private. The apps and code to do this are out in the wild, so this is not theoretical . So… do the recommended. How to do it: https://www.java.com/...

Don’t hasten to answer until you’ve read this: http://www.infopackets.com/news/business/microsoft/2013/20130111_hacker_finds_major_loophole_in_windows_8_rt.htm Turns out a clever hacker (Clrokr) has been running W8 software on A Surface and an RT OS. MS has described RT as “Similar to W8”. As it turns out, the hacker states they are the same OS only that MS has made RT unable to run W8 software apps. Clrokr has “undisabled” that. Why do I think MS is trying to ...

Earlier today Island Dog posted this. The post disappeared… and Adobe was totally swamped as everyone and his mother stampeded to get it. You’ll have to get an Adobe account. Second?   edit: The link to the download was removed for very good reason. What both I.D. and I missed [insert embarrassed here] was the key point: The link was for licensed users. Adobe made no mention of that fact on the page.  Why Adobe chose to do som...

Since most of the skinners here (and others) use Dropbox for file transfer, etc. I thought you might be interested in learning about this, although I don’t know how much good it will do you since while you can view the files, “You can’t download files using the Dropbox app right now, the only available option is to launch it in the default program. This limits the usability of the app significantly, one would expect at least an option to download files instead of opening the...

Apparently, drivers using the nvvsvc.exe belonging to the NVIDIA Driver Helper Service installed with the driver is the one affected with the security flaw. The flaw allows elevation of privileges and can be used to access sensitive data on your system. Mostly affected/targeted are businesses using the driver, but all systems with the helper service are affected and need updating. Until now, the work around has been to turn off/disable the helper service. Now a new GeForc...
