Ramblings of an old Doc

Currently, IE10 is only available for Windows 8. A preview version is available for Windows 7 which was problematic for many. Since then, MS has done quite a bit of work on IE10 and it is a fine browser with many good security features. As for its appearance… meh.

I’m neither saying “get it” nor “don’t get it” about IE10 or the toolkit.

I’m just telling you of your choices. Some prefer to wait, others not. Both are fine. I tend to be more wait in this area because of IE’s hooks in your OS.

There is no published release date for the W7 IE10 but it’s likely to be soon for users of W7 SP1, and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 as an important update via the “Automatic Update Service”. This means that on most systems, it will be installed automatically.

MS has released a toolkit which will disable automatic delivery of IE10. It can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36512

It will not block manual installation via downloading it from the MS Download Center or external source. You can always decide to “wait to see” if it is problematic this way.

If you already have the blocker toolkit/s for IE8 and/or IE9, they won’t work for IE10. You will need the IE10 blocker kit since they use different Registry keys.

Once downloaded, you will have to sign the “License Terms” and choose where to extract the files.

Once you do that, open an elevated cmd prompt (Start>cmd.exe>right click>Run as Administrator) then navigate to the path to the location of the extraction – for example: C:\users\doc\downloads\toolkits .

Run the command  ie10_blocker.cmd /B and hit “enter”. This creates the new registry key value DoNotAllowIE10 and sets its value to 1 under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\10.0.

If and when you decide to install IE10, just delete that Registry key.

Doing it that way, you won’t have to install it manually after deleting that key. You can simply activate your Windows Update and it should appear there, and MS will take care of it for you.
