Many were thrilled about Oculus Rift and gaming, others doubted the wisdom of Facebook’s purchase of the 3D gaming module currently being developed. Jump to Roberta Firstenberg’s chemotherapy resistant terminal malignancy, and that quality of mercy, and her granddaughter Priscilla who is a game artist artist. The dev and support team for Oculus Rift received a moving note from Priscilla about her grandmother who was essentially immobilized, and decided to do the right thin...

Do you hate reinstalling windows because of the updating process? Especially if you’re not on a super fast connection? “Slipstreaming is a method in which you integrate software updates with the original installation media.” – Lifehacker This is even for those who have fast connections and who really don’t need the hassle: http://lifehacker.com/how-to-slipstream-windows-updates-into-your-installatio-1562956432?utm_campaign=socialflow_lifehacker_facebook&ut...

You’ve all heard about it and about the website that checks url vulnerability. Just posting this for you Chrome users – now there’s an extension which works quietly in the background but will pop up a warning if you arrive at one of the smaller (or larger) websites which haven’t fixed the Heartbleed vulnerability. Here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chromebleed/eeoekjnjgppnaegdjbcafdggilajhpic   Update: There are...

Well, the IRS missed the April 8th deadline with Windows XP (58,000 computers worth) and will be paying MS millions for an additional year of security patches. Deadlines only apply to some XP users, it seems. This especially rankles since the IRS demands we all tow the line with our 1040s and now health insurance as well. Guess who’s going to pay for those patches? Doubly painful since they won’t be available to the folks actually paying for them. Turns out this will cost an...

"Windows XP mode  is restricted to Professional versions of Windows 7. Microsoft doesn’t officially support it on  Windows 8 , but there’s a way to get Windows XP Mode running on Microsoft’s latest operating system anyway. You won’t need a Windows XP disc or license key — just a computer running Windows 8."   For those who are unhappy, I found an article which explains the "how to": http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/forget-end-life-w...

This video ( http://youtu.be/jz55QSOaFbI ) from MS should explain the updates. There are “Critical” updates. Executive Summary Four bulletins are released by Microsoft this month that address 11 vulnerabilities across all products. The products affected by these vulnerabilities are Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office. Two bulletins are rated critical, the other two important. Top deployment priority are the two cr...

Really. This is a huge problem. There’s a bug in the security encryption software used by large segments of the internet (possibly millions of websites) to encrypt and secure private data from being transmitted to the internet which causes data leaks (passwords, user names, banking info, etc.) when the server communicates with a computer attempting to communicate with that server. Worse: The data can be stolen without leaving a trace, and impersonations would go undetected. Heart...

There’s an update available to Ps CS6, CC and Bridge (at least it was for mine). There’s new support for Canon EOS 1200D, Casio EX-100, DJI Phantom, Fujifilm X-T1, Hasselblad H5D-50c and HV, Nikon D3300 and D4S, Olympus OM-D E-M10, Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS40, Phase One IQ250, Samsung NX30 and Sony's Alpha a5000 and Alpha a6000 (ILCE-6000). The Oil Paint filter was based on a large code package from Pixel Bender which is outdated, and to be honest, I didn’t see much use for that fi...

Sorry to bring bad news, but it has gotten worse. So how is it worse? CryptoDefender wipes out all Shadow Volume Copies (also called VSS or Volume Snapshot Service) and ransom demands are added to every file containing encrypted files. So what does VSS do? It makes Snapshots. Snapshots have two primary purposes: they allow the creation of consistent backups of a volume, ensuring that the contents cannot change while the backup is being made; and they avoid problems with file locking...

If you’re interested, getting it isn’t easy. You have to go to Piriform’s Google Plus profile page and join the community. You can find that here: https://plus.google.com/communities/110652555815519063408   You’re not done yet. Now you have to go to the store page and click on “become a tester”. However, when I clicked on the link (from gHacks), I got this message: Sorry, there is nothing to see for you here. This could have several ...

Lifehacker was noting the update for Windows 8.1 with the Start Menu feature and the allowing apps to run in a desktop window and made mention of the Start8 and ModernMix Stardock apps which do that already... Nice to be noticed! And speaking about noticing, please note that the update to Start8 for the new Windows 8.1 update is available , per Island Dog.

I hope everyone has updated to the free 2.0 version since Leo the Lion’s post . The Licensed version seems to have a bug. Martin Brinkmann has posted on error code 20026. Apparently, the anti-rootkit component isn’t working. I’m not sure if this is true for the free version as well. “Error: Malwarebytes was unable to load the Anti-Rootkit Driver. Error code: 20026 Do you want to continue the scan without anti-rootkit support?” then, before he could answer...

After reading about crashes I decided that a long time peeve of mine is Windows reports for app crashes/hangs and Windows BSODs (thankfully truly rare in W7). The stuff you get in W7: “ProgX.exe has stopped working. Windows can check for a solution to the problem. Check online? Close the program. and you can get “details”. WinCrashReport does a good deal more. It won’t solve the problem, but it will give you a report with good options, (check the link) even if the app cra...

When I read this, I was reminded of the news item a while back about flying modems, and of Google’s sniffing networks during its ‘Street Mapping’. Zuckerberg’s story? “We’re bringing internet access to remote areas.” Maybe, but if these areas are so remote (Philippines and Paraguay now with more to come), do they have electricity and computers? Do they even want them? I seem to remember pictures after the massive hurricane they had. I thought they needed food and stable sh...
