Since there are members of the community who use/used iolo and System Mechanic, I’m posting an email I received from them. This is the warning which I received from Iolo: “It has come to our attention that entities with no affiliation to iolo technologies, representing themselves as "System Mechanic," have been contacting both iolo customers and members of the general public claiming that they have been alerted to computer "errors," "trouble signals,...

A quickie, but a really happy one for some! You all remember CryptoLocker…the ransomware that encrypts all your files and only after paying do you get them back (maybe)? Well, while it's possible to remove the virus with standard antivirus software, and thus stop the infection spreading any further, the encrypted files remained encrypted. Well, have I got great news for you! Turns out that some of the key servers used by the Cryptolocker scammers had been intercepted by the...

WinMerge is a great freebie…for both code monkeys and regular users. It undergoes regular updating, as well. Let’s say you’re working on a project and then have to work on something else…you come back after some time and download the latest project or file version and want to see what’s changed…or, you want to sync versions. Same for code – you get the idea. You can see more with its features, below: Features: General Supports Microsoft Windows 2000/X...

Three years ago, DARPA financed an IBM project to create a whole new paradigm of computing. The Result is SyNAPSE (Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics). This chip is radically different than any of its predecessors. “It’s a silicon core capable of digitally replicating the brain's neurons, synapses and axons. To achieve this, researchers took a dramatic departure from the conventional von Neumann computer architecture, which links internal memory an...

This is it. The ultimate portable toolkit for those unfortunate enough to have family members with computers and a telephone. gHacks has put together a competent review of this tool kit here: http://www.ghacks.net/2014/08/03/download-large-files/?_m=3n%2e0038%2e1325%2ehj0ao01hy5%2e1dg5 "GEGeek Tech Toolkit is a free collection of more than 300 portable freeware tools that serve a similar purpose. The collection has a size of 1.6 Gigabyte compressed and about 3 Gigabyte uncompr...

Not a topic foremost in the minds of many here at any given time, but one which affects far too many and the ones they know and love at some time…so… The way things are, for many forms of cancer, radiation (to kill the cancer cells) is a necessary adjunct to chemotherapy, immunotherapy and surgery. It has big drawbacks, though. Healthy tissue is irradiated along with the cancer. It can cause burns, inflammation, pain, nausea and vomiting and diarrhea. For infants and children, t...

OK…most of the possible exploits found and described by Joxean Kotek (COSEINC Singapore based security firm researcher) are pretty exotic and would need real experts to design bugs for, but some really aren’t, and worse…even when told of the bugs only a couple of companies bothered to ask how to fix them and only one (ESET) did so nicely. Apparently they expected him to supply the fixes free. “At the SyScan 360 security conference in Beijing earlier this m...

MS lost a battle in its strong consumer based stance regarding stored data. In short, MS has come out many times in its unyielding stance regarding data privacy. However, a New York District Court Judge has ruled a warrant ordering MS to deliver data stored in Ireland (outside the Court’s jurisdiction) legal. The reason for the request for data was not given publicly. MS intends to appeal this decision and therefore the Judge agreed to suspend the ruling until the appeal is rul...

The FBI has been using drones for some time probably about 9 years). Years, in fact. When Sen. Paul (R-KY) started asking questions about that, the FBI decided to comply with the law and did the requisite “Privacy Impact Analysis”…which is on one hand pretty funny and on the other hand pretty serious. Since the FBI started the drone business in 2005, and deployed them in 2006, there had to be a PIA (which I’m sure the FBI and any other Agency receiving one considers them)...

Regedit sucks…the drilling down and even the search…hit or miss. Registrar ( http://www.resplendence.com/registrar ) has many features which truly are excellent instead of regedit. The paid edition has features that keep track of changes an d allows multi-level undo’s as well as single changes. Not the free version. For a full list of differences check here: http://www.resplendence.com/registrar_compchart For the average person who wants to make one time edits, it’s more ...

This article is a tribute to those who were on their way to the HIV – AIDS Symposium in Australia on MH17. They will be missed. To try to explain what has been done, I’m using an image from the net which shows the process of infection of cells of the immune system and what the virus does in the cells. These researchers used human cells in culture. What these researchers (Temple U. Med School and others) have succeeded in doing is attacking the HIV virus at “4”, after viral ...

The first is an adaptable start screen. MS has learned from its faux pas with Windows 8. W9 will adapt itself to whatever you happen to be running it on: If a keyboard and mouse are attached, then W9 (codenamed “Threshold”) will give you the desktop mode. If not, and if you have a touch enabled device, W9 will load the mobile mode. The second: The Start Menu is coming back. The elimination of the Start Menu was a blunder on MSs part. Perhaps the worst of those tied to W8. So, a ...

One of the most annoying messages you can get in Windows is this one: “The action can’t be completed because the folder or a file is open in another program Close the folder or file and try again.” Or these: The source or destination file may be in use Cannot delete file: Access is denied The file is in use by another program or user There has been a sharing violation Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected Well, File Governor (32 ...

So sad…one of my most favorite actors has passed away at age 86. He was born James Scott Bumgarner on April 7, 1928 in Norman, Oklahoma, James Garner's early childhood in the Great Depression-era Dust Bowl was marked by hardships. He is the youngest of three sons. When he was only four years old, he lost his mother, Mildred Bumgarner, who was half-Cherokee. Garner’s career started with The Caine Mutiny Court Martial . He then landed several supporting roles in f...
