Ramblings of an old Doc
Welcome to Windows as a Service (WaaS)

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols isn't paranoid. He's actually rather smart, and his reasoning is excellent. I'm not an anti-W11er for no reason. I felt all along the it was essentially unnecessary, as W10 could be continually developed, and that the processor requirement and TP2 dustup were basically nonsense because as long as code will exist, hackers will as well, and no code is un-hackable.

"Yes, the Windows 11 security updates are good — if you have the right hardware. But  as I pointed out recently, you can already use those security updates if you're running the Windows 10 20H2 release (Windows 10 October 2020 Update). So the point in upgrading from Windows 10 to 11 is…what, exactly?" - Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols

I come from a time when the desktop was the revolution...you were given control over your data, word processing, publishing, etc. It was wonderful, if buggy at times. Remember W7? It was great. So is W10! W11 is the tube to DaaS.

DaaS isn't bad except for one thing: You will no longer have control over your OS. You won't be calling the shots, M$ will, and it'll cost a pretty penny, too. Microsoft 365 goes for $33 (US) per month...and will go up. What will W11 OS cost? Count on it. X-Box will be an additional cost, too.

"What I think is important is that, in combination with the subscription feature, this makes it easier for you to pay not just for Microsoft 365, but for Windows itself. No longer will Windows be a one-and-done purchase. It will be forever a subscription service with only one foot in your PC and the other ever more firmly in the cloud...Microsoft sneaked a Microsoft subscription manager into the February 2022 Windows 11 update. Check it out: look into the Windows 11 Settings menu > Accounts and you'll find a new section called "Your Microsoft account." There, you’ll find your Microsoft 365 subscription status, how full your OneDrive cloud storage is, and other details." -

Maybe it pays for a business, I can't opine regarding that.

For me, it's the sneaky, M$y way this is all being done that really causes me great concern, and may well be my exit point from the M$ world. W11 Home users initially required having an M$ account which they could later delete. W11 Pro users had to have an M$ account which they could not later remove and still have W11 Pro. And ask yourselves, "Why do I need an M$ account to dl and install the upgrade which was supposed to be "free"? Well, what's your privacy (nonexistent) worth?

What do you mean, Barb?

Having to pay yearly for Windows, when they come out with Windows 11. Isn't that what you meant? If not, sorry, I'm just now having my coffee.

Just checked my fully updated Win 11 Enterprise accounts section, i do not have "Your Microsoft account."  i do have one Nag screen asking me to update my MS info as i have not entered any MS accounts on set up, not for several years now.

Too many peeps will hand over there info to MS without realising what they are doing, i suppose that will never change. At least we can try to steer our membership in the right direction, and more importantly, Why.

They're just doing it differently for the different editions of Windows.

Just tell me why W10 continually updated wasn't good enough. I think it's because they want to create a situation where they can bill you on a "rental" basis.

How would it profit M$ to bill you more: Once via the cost of your PC or on a monthly basis?

Those articles are from June 2021 Dr. Peeps have been kicking this ball around for a while now Doc. I bet there will be users who do something about this future development, just like when the early nonsense about TPM modules etc started. I have No TPM Module and run Win11 on two of 4 SSDs. I am sure we will see more and more Modded Windows hit the net.

Windows 10 as the last ever Windows according to MS, some time before we seen news of Win11. I never really believed MS on that one anyway (No more windows after 10, Yeh Right). They have to sell there new products to make money or like we have previously disused, a dual strategy of Data theft and a new Windows allowing more and more of this.

I would not be surprised if we see a massive jump in Warez Windows, there are already a slew of Windows11 out there that deal with all the previous stupid hardware requirements, enabling the installation of Win 11 on older machines that are perfectly OK to Run it. Peeps have always pushed back at MS Stupidity, that will continue. I can not tell you why they never stuck with a constantly updated Win 10, although i understood it was a lie very early on.

I do think there will be a Win 12 and later in the years to come, in what form , i do not know, but i do know savvy peeps will push back at the attempts to rip us off, either that be the Windows itself with Data wholes all over the place, or Windows as a service as like you say "Rental". MS has more BS than Politicians, do i trust them , hell No, am i worried, not really for the reasons i have said.

The articles have not proven wrong. Your nag screen confirms that for your edition of Windows as well: Tell me what a Microsoft account has to do with your OS? Tell me why you would have to sign into that account in order to use your computer, and what will happen to all your work, documents, and everything else when that account is hacked?

"there are already a slew of Windows11 out there that deal with all the previous stupid hardware requirements, enabling the installation of Win 11 on older machines that are perfectly OK to Run it."

However, MS AI update will not update those machines in the future leaving them without the possibility of roll back. And you assume those workarounds and possible future hacks will be beneficial...which they may not be, and here on WC we do not advocate for hacks.

The articles on the OP prove themselves. Whether Warez appear to try and hack Windows isn't relevant to the central question of whether Windows PCs will become DaaS...and I think W11, the fancy security patch for W10, is another step on the way to that.

I am not taking issue with what you say Doc, more my point is, what ever crap they pull, there will always be a work around of one type or other. They did announce Windows 10 would be a Daas but that changed. I have a zero footprint in in the cloud anyway, so personally, i have to rely on my IT skillset to not get hacked. I too have seen many articles regarding this on Reddit, all come with several workarounds posted in replies. As this latest MS issue gets closer, more users will find ways to get things just how they like regardless of what MS do, i can not see that changing, hence my Replies of "MS Push, Others Push Back"

There is no need to have to sign into a MS account to use your PC, i agree with you, we should not have to, if you do not want to. It is not always Warez hacking that gets around a problem, as not all the workarounds require any hacking at all, i think that will continue as we see more and more MS Bull. Right now that nag screen of mine is just that, my machines still have complete and full functioning if i do nothing about that nag screen. We can hope that enough peeps make a big issue with this and vote with there Wallets, although i think there will still be too many who do not.

I do think MS would like to control everything we do and how on our machines, including making Future Win 11s a Daas, but after decades of users doing it the older way ie Buying there OS, or getting a free upgrade with Data wholes in it, it will be a huge change in direction to have to pay just to use Windows on fully cloud based services. MS has implemented serious user unfriendly things before and back tracked when they realised the user backlash is not what they expected, will they do it again over this, time will tell, even if they do not see the light, others will ,and will continue to help users do and set up things how they want. Everything i have read about this over the last few months is upsetting users. The replies in such articles are always a mix of between users who will not upgrade, and those who have found ways to get around this and report back in how to do it. The closer we get to this full roll out over all Editions , the more we will see user friendly ways around it. Windows 11 as a service is not for me either, will i pay for it as a Daas, no, but i will watch the scene closely until i a work around i am happy with comes along, yes.

Yep, it's called Win 7.

As soon as I saw the 'price' of Win 10 I knew where it was all heading....and if you bought it like you always did they wouldn't be allowed to change the rules later.

But...

Because you got it for eff-all they are not required to maintain a contractual agreement...and can move the goalposts where ever they like.

Welcome to the Scam that is Windows 10...11....365....

Where's Microsoft Bob when you need him? ...

Yep, it's called Win 7.

Necro OSs are not an option if You do IT for a living. Nor are they for a corporate environment. For a private tunnel-view, that's semi okay. I for me can't afford to have that.

As a site node: Everytime I have to work with Win 10, it looks unfinished.

Jafo, you really do love your windows 7

Going Backwards is not an option for me, i have to move with the times or i would be useless in my job. That work around will come , right now i am good but sooner or later i will have to do clean installs on two of my SSDs as i have never been a fan of one feature update installed over another and another, so will have no choice, but i do know i will not pay MS on an ongoing basis. It is a scam but with a change here and there i am not really worried.

Totally agree with C242, have to move forward not back.
