I found a really great article by Adam Dachis today at Lifehacker! Adam Dachis writes for Lifehacker, but apart from that, he’s a Photographer, Photoshop guru, and a web designer. Today, Lifehacker published Adam’s article, ” Basics of Photoshop: Color Correction, Touch Ups, and Enhancements ”. Adam takes you through various tools in Ps and explains what they do and shows how to use them. I found his video really educational and easy to f...

This non-invasive technology using extremely small nanoparticles embedded in the contact lens was developed by Chemical and Biochemical Engineering professor Jin Zhang at The University of Western Ontario. These engineered nanoparticles react with glucose molecules found in tears, causing a chemical reaction that changes their color. The obvious limitations are how the person ‘sees’ colors and that diabetes damages the eye’s natural lens and nerve layer...

Facebook most blacklisted site on the net. I just read this article on TheWindowsClub.com informing on the latest Facebook fiasco and that while supposedly increasing their security measures. Emsisoft has reported a massive outbreak of new Facebook Malware. One variant even hijacks the user’s Facebook account. Interestingly, it’s passed by using their instant messenger. Hardly surprising at the site where it’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg’s account was hacked . Em...

MakeUseOf.com has written about:   “The 7 Best Powerful Netbook Applications That Don’t Chug System Resources” and named Impulse the Best Game Platform For Netbooks!     The reasons given were that it is not as resource hungry as Steam which always runs in the background, that Impulse can be shut down and the games still played. Though fewer games are available, they also are less resource hungry. Mak...

Because of difficulties folks are having recently due to changes in the code at Youtube, I thought it might be a good idea to run through a “How to” thread. My special thanks to Hankers for the solution and for being my patient teacher. Embedding Video: Choose “ Use old embedded code ”. Right click and Copy it.  In the Quick Reply choose the little “ HTML ” button, right click and Paste the “old code”. ...

Everyone loves excellent freebie alternatives to expensive software. The all to often truth is that you get what you pay for (hopefully) and “There ain’t no such thing as free lunch.” So, folks collect gems, share them, write articles about them, try and find sites loaded with them…. Here’s an alternative to that: The alternative is AlternativeTo.net . Bookmark it now. You can always come back to this article. The approach to use is easy: click on Windows...

In the news this past week was an article notifying on the last block of IPv4 addresses having been sold in Florida. What does that mean? Well, it means that for ISP’s, mobile and home users the transition to IPv6 has become fairly imminent. When the Internet was born, a mistake was made by the designers, pretty much like the mistake that led to the wave of fear about the 2K bug. This time, the fault was a lack of imagination in seeing how huge the Internet wo...

From Technet : Microsoft today said it will issue 12 security updates next week to patch 22 vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer (IE), Windows, its Internet server and Visio, the company's data diagramming tool. The company also announced it will provide patches next Tuesday for three bugs it has already acknowledged, including one that has been exploited by criminals for several weeks, which I’ve kept you updated about. The most important of these fixes are the ...

In light of the recent events in Egypt where we saw an “Emergency Off Switch” used for the first time, my memory was jarred. Last year, Senator Joe Lieberman (Independent, Connecticut) proposed just such a switch. He did so because of concerns regarding a cyberattack on the USA. Just two hours ago, NYConvergence (a tech magazine for the NY, NJ and CT area) reported Sen. Lieberman wants to re-propose this legislation ( LINK ). There are several ways to loo...

From Fox tech news, “Intel has found a defect in one of its chips, hurting its credibility during a major product launch and at a time when demand for microprocessors in PCs is being threatened.” The company said on Monday it stopped shipments of the chip used in personal computers with its most advanced Sandy Bridge line of processors and has already started production of a new version.     Backup is important, but without recovery options it’s just not enough. I noticed Paragon’s Backup on Giveaway of the day’s website today, so I went shopping (not ‘shopping’ that’s what I did for that image) to see what I could find for you. On their website I found the software in the title, and it’s free (no money). While I use Acronis, this software is far from shabby. I strongly suggest the folks without backup and recovery software cruise on over and read...

Windows (ALL current editions) is vulnerable to a hack through it’s MIME HTML handling protocol. This vulnerability would allow malicious code to be run through Internet Explorer and through Opera . This is a variant of XSS (Cross Site Scripting). Firefox requires an add-on to read and write MHTML files. In it’s default configuration it is not vulnerable, Safari and Chrome are not either. Microsoft recommended that users lock down the MHTML protocol handler by runni...

This is a valuable tool to have from AVG, a trusted name in Security software. It sniffs out links with malware in them proactively before you navigate there. There are potential conflicts. While it's stated (see below) that Microsoft Security Essentials will conflict, on my computer it did not pose any problem at all. I think the conflict comes because of the toolbar. I did not install that. Furthermore, MSE updates flawlessly. During installation it offers to install an AVG Secu...
