It’s only for Chrome. It’s absolutely lovely… You can view the video here: http://livestartpage.com/ So…what is it? It’s basically a dream in a browser. Along with it, there’s weather (if you let it know where you are), Speed dial, Settings and a huge assortment of themes. When do you see it? Whenever you want…all you have to do is open a new tab, and take a break from what you were doing. Here’s mine. You can’t really...

Amazon had decided to remove data encryption from FireOS, despite it being a very sound security practice. Clearly, if one’s device is hacked, and the thief gets nothing but scrambled data, that’s a more secure practice. The reason Amazon cited? Very few were using it. That raises another question…how did they know that, I wonder? I guess their OS dials home with “anonymized data”. Maybe. However, Amazon then found itself in a very awkward position. First, it ran into a fi...

DROWN is short for Decrypting RSA with Obsolete and Weakened eNcryption and it depends on a “back door” “EXPORT_GRADE” put into US products by law until 2000. Supposedly, it would keep our regular communications secure from hackers but accessible to folks like the NSA so they could get a leg up on criminals of all sorts. So outcomes of EXPORT_GRADE? KIlled sales for US products since foreign companies could produce full strength products. and it left us with weak, now ver...

Not seeing a whole lot reportable in tech at the moment, so…Zika! Don't panic. Please. When I was in Jump School, there was a sign at the gate of the training instruments which read, "Knowledge prevents fear." My response was unprintable, and in a mixture of Hebrew and Arabic. This is the Zika virus…it’s an RNA virus which doesn’t specifically target any tissue (like brain in developing fetuses), but which is an equal opportunity infection. It isn&rsquo...

This just in from Hankers: Linux Mint (Cinnamon edition) has been hacked and a backdoor inserted in it. You can read about it here: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2994 Apparently, hackers created a backdoor in Linux Mint (Cinnamon edition) and then hacked Linux Mint’s website and changed the download link to point to the hacked edition. If you downloaded this edition on 2/20/16, you might very well be affected. The blog article explains how to check for this hack. ...

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away there was an app which blocked unwanted and possibly dangerous ads. Then, the good Jedi sold out to the dark side of the Force. At least, that’s what the Interactive Advertising Bureau Chief Randall Rothenberg is saying about the folks at Adblock Plus…in fact, he’s saying they’re not much more than an old fashioned extortion racket…selling their “white listing” for a price ( here ) and here . At the heart of all this is the “Acce...

Tim Cook, is saying “No!”, in thunder to the DoJ. But…”What if there’s info in there that would help catch terrorists?” That “What if” that makes us decide for ourselves the answer to Ben Franklin’s statement. Tim Cook said “No.” to the Justice Department’s Order to assist the FBI extract data from the San Bernadino terrorist’s phone. Wanna know something? He was right to do so. Why? Well, for one thing, does it occur to anyone that the FBI has the terrorist’s fingerprint?...

This one is truly bad. Why? Because patient care and medical information have been compromised in a severe manner. Any hack is bad…this is just much, much worse…in my opinion. The Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center has been unable to use its computer system for more than a week thanks to a ransomware attack. The hackers are said to be demanding more than $3 million in return for returning access. This means lab and imaging data for current and past patients has b...

So, W10 now has a higher market share than XP. Really? Do you trust NetMarketShare’s numbers? They say IE is still beating all other browsers easily. When was the last time YOU used IE? The Federal Government’s Digital Analytics Program (DAP) gives different numbers than NMS. They count differently, though. DAP lumps mobile and desktop together. NMS separates the two. So, NMS says W7 – 52.5% (desktop), W10 – 11.5%, and XP – 11.4%. W8.x – 10.4%. Hard to swallow, because by...

Before you pass out, “The IRS has revealed that cyber attackers managed to trick its system in handing over more than 100,000 access codes for user accounts. Fortunately the breach was discovered before any sensitive data was compromised.” – infopackets The attack occurred at a source outside the IRS. Social Security numbers were stolen, and the hackers set a bot working, using them, and E-PINs were generated from those stolen numbers…to wait for later filing of ta...

Discovered many interesting things on livescience.com – here are two as an example: The first: Images of the brain, processed by a neuroscientist-artist…Greg Dunn. He took various areas of the brain and then processed them creating unique art. One example in the screen shot below (more can be found on gregadunn.com ):   The second is more of a mind expanding piece regarding the “male” vs. the “female” brain. Turns out, when this was examined by Dr. Dafna Joe...

Permit me to quote: “Microsoft Marketing chief Chris Capossela explained that users who choose Windows 7 do so “at your own risk, at your own peril” and he revealed Microsoft has concerns about its future software and hardware compatibility, security and more. “We do worry when people are running an operating system that’s 10 years old that the next printer they buy isn’t going to work well, or they buy a new game, they buy Fallout 4, a v...
