I rarely post about new pharmaceutical technology...but this is nothing less than miraculous.  Read the article linked above. This new technology enables researchers to synthesize and analyze 40,000 molecules in a bubble smaller than the head of a pin. This will accelerate vaccine and pharmaceutical development by a factor of one million. This should also make the R&D cheaper, and far less wasteful of energy, materials, time and labor and therefore the cost of medicines should dro...

Don Rickles is no more... He was pretty much an unknown until one night in 1957, when Frank Sinatra walked into a club during his act. “Make yourself at home Frank. Hit somebody.” said Rickles. Sinatra roared — with laughter. In 1985, when Sinatra was asked to perform at Ronald Reagan’s second Inaugural Ball, he insisted that Rickles accompany him for a comedy routine. Rickles, naturally, did not spare the president (“Am I going too fast for y...

An incredible concept...but " four years after they were first proposed, scientists have managed to add a fourth dimension - the movement of time - to a crystal for the first time, giving it the ability to act as a kind of perpetual 'time-keeper'."  The concept is explained in the linked article, as well as here:  http://www.sciencealert.com/physicists-just-created-the-world-s-first-time-crystal   "They did this by chaining together a line of ytter...

The game was his daughter's idea...and Tyson has included folks from JPL, NASA, astronauts, explorers... There will be missions, a construct your galaxy, etc. Apparently it'll be multi-player with a community of imaginative players who will interact with real experts... “We will have holographic tutorials as part of the core game that will prep you for challenges  and new facets of gameplay as they are introduced,..Murphy said the gameplay mirrors our univ...

As if the phony emissions testing wasn't enough? That 'keyless' entry fob? Not very secure, it turns out. In fact, it's eminently hackable... Volkswagen does have an 'immobilizer' built in, but it isn't perfect...so, your car could be broken into, and maybe that's the device we saw being used on Jeeps? Anyway, the older (1998) HT2 chips were easily hackable, too. "Professor Srdjan Capkun of ETH Zurich found himself perched on the fenc...

I wrote a recent article about this…and that Mark Zuckerberg and James Comey put tape over theirs: http://drjbhl.joeuser.com/article/478305/Webcams_and_disabling_thempro_and_con When writing about this, little did I suspect that a month later I’d come across this… http://www.techworm.net/2016/07/hackers-capture-pc-user-wanking-demand-10000-ransom-not-leaking-video.html But I did, and as we all know… So…a bit of humor for your Sunday…and a salute to Matt for his...

April 25, 1915…the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed at Gallipoli to fight against the Turks, allies of the Germans, in WWI. They waged an eight month fight, and ultimately lost, but they established a tradition of being part of the fight despite the deaths of 8,700 Australians and 2,700 New Zealanders…theirsacrifices were not for naught. This tradition and spirit were rallying cries in WWII, when the ANZAC forces fought Rommel in North Africa, and the Ja...

Discovered many interesting things on livescience.com – here are two as an example: The first: Images of the brain, processed by a neuroscientist-artist…Greg Dunn. He took various areas of the brain and then processed them creating unique art. One example in the screen shot below (more can be found on gregadunn.com ):   The second is more of a mind expanding piece regarding the “male” vs. the “female” brain. Turns out, when this was examined by Dr. Dafna Joe...

David J. Slater is the photographer who set up a monkey selfie shot (in 2011) and when it became a meme, requested Wikipedia to remove the monkey selfie with a DCMA letter. Wiki said, sorry but the photo is uncopyrightable since current law says “The term ‘authorship’ implies that, for a work to be copyrightable, it must owe its origin to a human being. Materials produced solely by nature, by plants, or by animals are not copyrightable.” – Copyright ...

Oliver Sacks was a British Neurologist. He was remarkable for his empathy and caring as well as his gift for using the English language so well as rare as that would seem, nowadays. He took care of patients in a Home for the elderly, as well as being a renowned author. While the melanoma had spread to his liver, he never lost the qualities which endeared him to many. He wrote many essays and books about his patients, the brain and how it works, and the human condition. Many remem...

Saw this (take a look at the 8 slides in the show)…as well as a notice about a 50 mile wide swarm of grasshoppers over Texas…and figured this might be the right time to say, “It’s been great! Fanx for the fish!”, if these events are a portent of something awful to come… http://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/mayfly-hatch-overwhelms-minnesota-wisconsin/1/ http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/23/us/feat-weather-radar-bugs-texas/index.html

    H. R. Giger, the Swiss surrealist whose work includes the art that gave us “Alien” has passed on at age 74. He studied Art and Design in Zurich and his work basically explored the relationship between the human body and machines. He termed his style “biomechanical”, and it was eroto-macabre, as well. The cover art for “Brain Salad Surgery” illustrates that well. He shall be missed. Rest In Peace, sir.
