"Both updates are listed as compatibility updates for Windows 10 Version 1703. To make this clearer: these are dynamic updates and not updates that most users will come into contact with directly. They may be added to Windows 10 ISO images or installation sources, and are also provided during installation when the operating system runs an update check." gHacks. By the way, RedneckDude has noted that MS has requested people not to download and install the Creator's Update be...

It's no secret that Elon Musk (and others ) are afraid of the huge, possible pitfalls of AI. And yes, usually what happens is something we never considered, sort of along the lines of "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition.", not that I think the Inquisition was at all like a Monty Python skit, but there are reasons to fear both "minded" or "mindless" machines. The irony is that they can be both simultaneously, thanks to AI. So, Musk has come (it appears) to have come to Dr. S...

Don Rickles is no more... He was pretty much an unknown until one night in 1957, when Frank Sinatra walked into a club during his act. “Make yourself at home Frank. Hit somebody.” said Rickles. Sinatra roared — with laughter. In 1985, when Sinatra was asked to perform at Ronald Reagan’s second Inaugural Ball, he insisted that Rickles accompany him for a comedy routine. Rickles, naturally, did not spare the president (“Am I going too fast for y...

MS has finally revealed what data it collects from you (if you're using W10). I'm sure they collected data from earlier OSs, but they haven't revealed just what in which OS. There's a good general picture in the linked article, but if you want the nitty gritty, go here:  https://technet.microsoft.com/itpro/windows/configure/basic-level-windows-diagnostic-events-and-fields   and here:  https://technet.microsoft.com/itpro/windows/configure/windows-dia...

This just in from an early updater to the north of us (me, anyway)... "Microsoft may have talked up the creativity aspects of the Windows 10 Creators Update, but some of the best things about Windows’ major releases are all the little conveniences that fly under the radar. Some of these are truly new additions—USB Audio 2.0 support, for example—while others are once-buried features that have gained new prominence, like the family options breakout within Windows...

I enjoy reading articles in TechRepublic...I found this one very informative as to possible borking with the Creator Update. Mind you, I know folks who opted for early update and it has gone just fine for them, without problems at all.   On the other hand, MS's big updates have a penchant for problems, so you might wish to wait with this one to see reports of problems before implementing the update. This article discusses how:  http://www.techrepublic.com/arti...

Well here's a first...gHacks (Martin Brinkmann) gave an app a five star rating. "Bandizip 6.0 is offered as a portable version for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows, and as an installer. The latest version is not compatible with Windows XP. Only option that you have is to keep on using Bandizip 5.x on devices running the operating system. Installation is straightforward. Please note that the option to send usage statistics and crash reports is enabled when you install the p...

" Adguard is a third-party web service that allows you to download Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office ISO images from Microsoft services directly.... One of the better options to get those is provided by the  Windows ISO Downloader program for Windows . You may use the program to grab ISO images of Windows or Office versions or editions straight from Microsoft servers.... The  Adguard website  offers an alternative.   The easiest way to get rid of the adds in the W10 Start Menu is with Start10. But say you haven't gotten Start 10 (not here!), there are other places it will appear: Your desktop and file explorer. Here's a quicky video tutorial from TechRepublic on how to rid yourself of the nuisances:  http://www.techrepublic.com/article/windows-10-gets-even-more-ads-heres-how-to-disable-them-all/?ftag=TRE684d531&bhid=23906934820265111040450294515746     Enjoy! ...

More meanderings and a really good find for the photographers among us. Lightroom (Adobe) is a great piece of software for image improvement. The article linked gives five alternatives which are free. I'm playing with two of them at the moment, and they are: RawTherapee  and LightZone .   You can read about them on their sites. There are screen shots as well as help pages. Steep learning curves, but really good software.     Download links...

Stumbled across this quite by accident...so, here it is. The catalog can be found here:  https://software.nasa.gov/NASA_Software_Catalog_2017-18.pdf   It's far too long to quote, but there's just about anything you could want or need...   "The NASA catalog also contains some super software which can help ordinary computer users. Here are some of the popular tools that have been open sourced by NASA: Worldview Satellite Imagery Browsing and Down...
