Ramblings of an old Doc

Ran into a weirdy. Windows 7 and I'm the Admin. Tried to change a background.ini in one of Giz's Docks, but Notepad and Wordpad wouldn't let me save the changes! Downloaded "Unlocker 1.8.9" but that wouldn't kick in when I wasn't allowed to save the changes.

Anyone got any ideas? I doubt yrag will see this with the new site.

What kind of message are you getting when you try to save?

on Apr 28, 2010

Access Denied

on Apr 28, 2010

I remember getting that once. I had to give myself permission to change it, lol. Right click the ini file and check the properties. Look at the security tab and see if the permission boxes are checked. If not, you will need to give yourself permission.

Weird, but the ini's properties doesn't have a security tab.

Now I really dont know what to tell you...all the ini files properties I click on have a security tab...

Are you trying to edit the ini of a dock you're using atm? I've had that problem with messing with the images, but never the ini. If that's the case, switch to a different skin, then edit the ini and see if that helps. If anything, unload OD, make the changes, reload OD, apply.

I just edited the ini for VenomTab2, while running the background, and it worked fine.

Won't let me do it, Bebi, whether it's running or not (OD2+).

Doc, I found that if you try and edit it in the actual Programs, stardock, object2 location it will give you problems. If you copy the folder to My documents or whatever place you save things you can edit and save it there and copy it into the program location.

Doc, also make sure it isn't active on your desktop

Thanx, Dave...I'll give it a try.

Hey Doc; try this, open OD2 config, Style/Color, Change Background, select background you wish to edit, right click select Open skin's settings file, make changes.

When I edit a .ini I never select save from File menu, I just close notepad and then click yes on dialog about saving changes.

After changes saved select another skin, let in apply, which it will automatically do just by selecting it in list, then select the skin you have just edited to see changes.

This could help - it adds "Take ownership" to the right click menu so you can instantly take ownership of any file without having to change permissions. I use it when I run into problems like this.

..or, check to see if the file is set to 'read only'.

Thanks, all! Picked up the software G3mpi3...Truth? This used to be a helluva lot easier in XP.
