Ramblings of an old Doc
New deceptive tactic by MS
Published on February 1, 2023 By DrJBHL In Personal Computing

MS is at it again. The "it" is deceptive advertising regarding the upgrade from W10 to W11.

The upper picture is the upgrade screen as it appears on the W10 screen, a

"full-screen Windows 11 ad offering to upgrade to the latest operating system. And in typical Microsoft fashion, available options are as head-scratching as it gets: two buttons, and both mean "I agree." - Taras Buria, Neowin

The blue and white buttons (red arrows) both mean to "upgrade". The yellow arrow points to the microscopic text in the silver bar rejecting the upgrade to W11.

This aggressive and misleading push to W11 just happens to have coincided with MS ceasing the sale of W10 on January thirty first (Link). Support for W10 will continue until 2025, so one does not have to do an immediate upgrade, in any case.

"Luckily, Microsoft has yet to start automatic upgrades to Windows 11, so the chances of you getting the new operating system out of the blue are slim. However, it is safe to say that Microsoft will only increase the pressure on users in attempts to make Windows 11 more popular." - Taras Buria, Neowin

Have a good rest of the week.

My thanks to Hankers who brought this to my attention.

I saw this the other day.  I was unimpressed.

Would not be surprised if Microsoft does not get in trouble for that software dark pattern. Luckily I wont have to worry about that on my plex machine. My outdated CPU/Motherboard not having TPM module pretty much locks t to windows 10 only. On windows 11 on my main machine but had done so way back then when win11 was first available test.

Actually, one sure way to prevent that ad from appearing is by disabling the TPM if it fulfills MS's requirement for W11. I don't recommend doing that since it could break other stuff.

I wont have to worry about that. My motherboard for some odd reason even though its fairly new did not include a tmp module in it. I checked all around the bios for a setting. Nothing exist for it. Im sure it probably has a port to plug one in, but its not worth doing so since need the system on 24-7 since its a server. It being on windows 10 will be nice for quite some time. No interruptions to its service.

Just use Rufus and there is no need for the TPM Module, Ram and chip requirements to install Win 11. If You can run Win 10 well, then it will run Win 11 in the same way. Rufus removes the need for those Hardware Requirements at the point of adding the OS to the USB Stick. I have ran my PC now since Win 11 was launched, MS said i did not meet the requirements for Win 11, i thought differently, so used Rufus and all has been very well, no issues, no problems.

The point of the reply was how to avoid the MS ad to install W11 altogether.

MS are sneaky little Blighters Doc, our peeps need to know MS can not have it all there own way, no matter what they try, TPM modules mentioned, so i shared the wisdom, use Rufus and it does not matter, no nags or adds, too may peeps still unaware of this, better a few lines saying it than peeps throwing away good Hardware, and why, just because MS Says. Almost every single bad move MS has made gets put right by savvy members, this trick of there's will too, its the way of things, can not see that changing any time soon.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

If only that was the case for MS hey Doc, does seem to apply better to those who reverse Bad additions from MS.
