Windows 11 isn't even on my machine yet!
Published on April 22, 2022 By DrJBHL In Personal Computing

When my redneck friend (yeah, the one I always 'shop') sent me this Windows 12 tidbit, I figured "He's seeking vengeance for all my miserable shops." Then I started researching it. As with most things MS, there are two sides. One says it's in the works, the other says nah, 11 is barely here.

It seems it's all based on a SwiftSecurity tweet which was supposed to be a joke, and was deleted. Well, that stopped nothing in our current age of conspiracy theories, of course.

What then followed was a list of what should be in W12, it's release date and what's needed for W12, etc.

MS has, of course, revealed nothing and confirmed even less.

Say, didn't they say W10 was the last OS and it would be updated indefinitely? I guess the sales department had something to say about that idea.

As usual, Martin Brinkmann at gHacks is the voice of sanity at the eye of this tempest in a virtual tea pot:

"Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system is supported until 2025, Windows 11, which Microsoft released just last year, has no final end of support date yet. Feature updates are supported for 2 years for Home users and Microsoft will release new versions that are supported for another 2 years.

If Windows 11 is supported for 10 years, the period of Windows 10's support, then Windows 11 will be supported until late 2031. Windows 12 will likely be released in the meantime, if Microsoft continues to push forward with its strategy." - Martin Brinkmann (gHacks)

My thought? MS always has something in the works. Is it W12 or just another OS to stimulate computer sales with hardware requirements...or is there a difference?

My take is that Windows 12 won't be just a hardware-sales strategy, but the next step toward funneling all Windows software through the Microsoft Store so they can take their cut there too.  Won't happen quickly or easily, but they can smell it.

You are not wrong Daiwa about there possible intent, as they are already trying to do this or at least pointed in that way in Win 11 22H2 by trying to ensure a user can not complete the installation process without inputting a MS Account E Mail, but as in all things MS does that the end user does not like, resourceful peeps negate and change this back to how they wish to do things, Rufus changes it all back.

Not sure about ALL Windows software going that way fully, even in the future. There are just too many 3rd Party Companies who write software for Windows OSs, i can not see MS taking over every Software house everywhere or make the companies release only through there store.. They may wish to do this, but in reality i can not see all Windows Software going through the MS Store. I think there is still a lot of peeps like myself who have almost never used the MS store, but who use there Computer in loads of different ways, using multiple software from lots of varied software houses, doing numerous things.

It is possible that Windows 12 will just be Windows 11 finally finished but with a fancy new name. For example, I just can't see them building things like yet another taskbar when the one on Windows 11 still doesn't have the same amount of functionality as Windows 10 did. If this were the strategy then it would be reason for a Windows 7 holder over to finally upgrade. However, if Microsoft were to build everything again from scratch then we should expect a repeat of Windows 11 where functionality returns at a slow pace. If this is the case then holdovers are going to remain holdovers until Microsoft has a final product again one day.

That's how they did it in the past with several Window versions like the dreaded Windows Me.

I agree mate, possibly Windows 12 will just be a Re Badge like they do in the car industry and will indeed just be a complete Win 11.
