Ok...so, MS decided (last month) to have one update model for W7, 8.1 and W10: Cumulative Updates. This new schedule will start on October 11th. If this makes you nervous, well honestly? It should.

You will no longer have the ability to choose which updates you want, and which you don't. "But I don't use Outlook, etc.!" - "Who cares?", MS has replied with this policy change, essentially saying, "After all, it may be your machine, but they're our OS and apps.".

Well...for business owners, this could be really bad news. IT Admins will not be able to test and separately apply patches. If the expression, "I don't care what went wrong, just fix it!" might become common on the IT job search boards. Not installing security updates isn't really a choice, either as businesses don't like security breaches. Damned if you do, damned if you don't comes to mind.

MS's reason for this? 

"Historically, we have released individual patches for [Windows 7 and 8.1], which allowed you to be selective with the updates you deployed," Mercer said. "This resulted in fragmentation where different PCs could have a different set of updates installed leading to multiple potential problems." - MS

But, when you stop and think about it, this was one of the reasons enterprises held onto W7 and W8.1: The fear of losing the control over the updates and being able to test them on their systems without fear of crashing their main, 'actual' business systems. So, why not just update to Windows 10? You won't hear MS's corporate sales objecting, will you? 

By the way, Vista won't be getting this model as it falls off the support list in 4/17.
