Ramblings of an old Doc

Another report of malware and theft out of China. This time? A Chinese company called Yingmob has infected about 10 million Android devices all over the world and exploits them for some $300,000 per month.

“In February, Check Point discovered a malware called HummingBad. The malware makes ads pop up on the screen of an infected device and blocks the user from any other options except for clicking on the ad. It then steals the money that an ad agency pays for the click-through on the ad.

Check Point tracked the malware to the Yingmob offices in Chongqing, southwestern China.

Yingmob’s legitimate business has access to 85 million Android devices. Check Point estimates quarter of them are infected by malicious apps.’ – The Epoch Times

That’s the small stuff. The real problem is that the malware gives Yingmob control over the device and access to personal data, and turn the devices into slaves that can launch hacking attacks on websites…and both can be sold to criminals.

Yingmob has been linked ti YiSpecter – malware on iOS devices as well. Huawei, Lenovo and Xiaomi smartphones have this crap installed on them before they reach the customer.

So seriously: Why are they allowed to do business here, or anywhere?

What does it take to realize that China isn’t a bargain, after all?

Enough is enough.

Unfortunately, the Chinese hackers do it to show the rest of the world how stupid they are.

Tom: They do it to get rich. To spy. Stupid has nothing to do with it, unless you continue to buy from there.

Yeah, I know Doc, but even if they do it for the money, they are still showing us how the rest of the world is stupid.

I don't know, doing something that makes the rest of the world hate you doesn't sound that bright.

Wasn't there a report last week about the Chinese government saying they wanted the Chinese companies to put even more surveillance capabilities in software for phones and PCs. If you looked into it you'd be surprised (or perhaps not) how many Chinese companies are ultimately owned or controlled by the Chinese government. Often through several layers of company or organisational body ownership, until you get to the source. Even newer independent one's can't do anything if the government come round and want everything. In that respect the government really is essentially all powerful I think.

China gets away with a lot. Western powers/companies are forever enchanted by the promise of a huge marked of people. Hundreds of millions of new middle class and plenty of super rich too. Chinese companies and their government dangle that carrot of a billion customers every time...It never seems to work out well for the western company in the long term but they all still want a go, it'll be different next time they believe...

Perhaps the one thing they don't take into account is the fact that what goes around comes around. Eventually it'll come back and bite them in the ass.

How about a simple: "Don't ship it if it has any surveillance/spyware on it. If you do, the market's closed to that brand."

Why not we haven't had a big war in a few decades.
