Ramblings of an old Doc

MS is having problems in China, so it decided to “modify” W10 for the Chinese government.

There are no specifics, but what do you bet one of the changes will be related to “Privacy Settings”? Folks all over the world have expressed concerns over what and how ‘depersonalized data’ is being collected…but the Chinese government more so…wonder why?

In the past, China has managed to get its own official versions of Windows XP.

So, TEC (China Electronics and Technology Group) among other companies to partner with MS is trying to improve MS’s image in China…and there’s this:

“There’s also a joint-venture with C&M Information Technologies to provide the Chinese government with customized versions of Windows 10. The government has long hated the path Microsoft took with Windows 8, and more so, Windows 10.” – TWC

Right now, China’s working on “its own” OS “NeoKylin”…which “borrows” a lot from XP and Linux. W 8 was banned by the Chinese, and the city of Siping completely dumped Windows, and installed NeoKylin. Also, Dell Commercial PCs have been planned to be preinstalled with NeoKylin.

“Satya Nadella said at the Microsoft Government Cloud Forum in Washington D.C. that the company is investing billions of dollars in security technology supposed to protect user data, thus making sure that even if information is being sent to the firm, it can't be accessed afterwards.” – tenforums

Right. He’s spending billions to collect “depersonalized data” which no one can read. Did we all take a crazy pill? And he wants us to believe that what the OS reveals to you it’s sending is the same as what it sends to MS. Sure it is. And better? It’s been doing that since W7. No wonder the Chinese told MS “Thanks but no thanks.”

So…my question is simple: If MS can modify W10 with respects to data collection to please a non-allied government, how come we all don’t get the same deal…oh yeah…no zillion person market. Now, just who is the captive market? And if you think the government protects your data on its antiquated systems, then here’s some other news for you: The NSA has been spying on Congress (no warrants) and reporting it to the White House. Watergate? Peanuts. And the data on 191,000,000 Americans (Name, age, party affiliation and who knows what else) was leaked by the incompetent configuration of a database.

If you work on the reality that everyone in the West likely to want a computer/OS already has one...apart from those still breeding....then yes, China is the only market that matters.

Same goes for cars....and pretty well anything you can think of...

In an odd sort of way, considering the players, it seems to demonstrate what can be accomplished with a little competition - even if the "competition" is one massive monopoly birthed in a market share large enough to catch the attention of the other (technically somehow not quite) monopoly.

I also find myself thinking about the post you made about a year and a half ago referring to MS contracting with the U.S. government for continued XP support because of the costs associating with upgrading the computers.  Seems that substantial market may have been considering "costs" beyond money.

As for the rest of us, well I guess it's all about the "sharing".
