Ramblings of an old Doc

For Cortana and other ‘services’ to work, W10 collects extensive data – personal, included.

This is used in an ‘aggregated form’ (supposedly ‘depersonalized’). A user can (with extensive knowledge of W1o’s switches, and how to get at them) theoretically turn them off, but most won’t out of fear/ignorance of how to do it.

Ashampoo AntiSpy collects all those settings in one manageable interface where you can configure them as you wish. It works ONLY with W10.

These are what can be altered with the tool (misspellings on the website included):

The normal wifi/sense settings should be listed under your network and internet settings and should include 2 checkboxes or sliders for you to disable sharing.
Start button- the settings wheel - network and internet - wifi
at least that is where they used to be as i remember - could be that they changed it though not sure since i dont run any wifi

That's what I've found on the net with a search but I don't have those check boxes/sliders/options at all! No mention of WiFi Sense at all. I'm wondering if it's because of my selection when installing? No idea. But running Ashampoo's Privacy Protector 2015 shows it's enabled each and every time I run it... Very odd.

Try DoNotSpy. It's what I'm using and all settings stay as I have them selected.

My issue with WiFi Sense is that is uploads your wireless passcode to MS.  Sure, MS encrypts it, but they have the encryption key.  It's opt out not opt-in so if you miss the little check box or don't know what it does, it's uploaded and on MS servers even if you opt out later.

If I give my pass code to a visitor using Win10, their set up will upload it for me and share it with all their contacts...whether I've opted out or not.

Since I'm not able to view the data MS is uploading, how do I know if adding '_optout' does anything at all.  It may just be there to make me feel better.

So no thanks.  Win10 has a bunch of cool features, but it's not worth the bad ones.

Odd, I turned it off during install. Ran this program and found that it was back on. I have since gotten in the habit of running this program upon booting up and each time I find that this wifi sense is back to being enabled...

It could be that during non-update updates, MS resets everything...which is something you guys should look at...since I am not on W10. Could also be that the program resets all the parameters to the default and then goes through them all with you...

You can try and do this:
Navigate to your Device manager.
uninstall the WIFI driver.
Reboot your machine.

Windows will then look for the driver and install it.
Im not sure if this will trigger the wifi option to pop up.
But its worth a try.

Exactly my point, and then there's the hard coded stuff some tech writers wrote about that can't be turned off.

According to one writer [don't remember who just now], even if you turn off wi-fi sense and use a VPN, Microsoft can still see your passkey and IP address.... not to mention banking details and other personal data.  So while MS is claiming to be transparent, it designed a backdoor into Win 10.  Whether that is for its own use or the NSA/CIA is unclear, but it's reportedly there.... and if it's there it can be exploited by those with less desirable intentions.

So yeah, while one may not have anything to hide from the authorities, one certainly has much to hide from potential hackers.... and this new backdoor in Win 10 is an invitation to those with ill-intent.  Hopefully somebody will come up with a firewall setting and/or router block to prevent that information being accessed and/or transmitted.  Maybe then I would consider Win 10 as a viable OS replacement for 8.1.... IF Stardock has updated WB AND IP for it.... cos for me there's NO getting past 10's ugly UI and sickly icons.

Microsoft is working on an update for EP.
The update´s purpose as mention is to make it shutup and give it a muzzle.
How far that goes is still unknown of now.
It will be for EP and there is no mentioning for home or Pro

Using the DoNotSpy program finally got rid of WiFi Sense for me. I still check on a regular basis just to be sure. Between the two programs I've got it all shut down. Seems good so far and I haven't run into any compatibility problems yet. Some programs/games run more quickly, too. As far as all the comments about how ugly it is, and looking at some of the screen shots that were shown on web sites made me fully agree!, once I've done my usual little tweaks, added Start10, Objectdock plus, Nexus Ultimate back on I've got my 3 screens pretty much how I like them:

Well Microsoft's Terry Myerson has made Win 10 so much more attractive..... NOT !!!!!

He claims that MS does not scan emails or personal messages to deliver targeted advertising, which is the complete opposite of what was stated in the Win 10 privacy agreement:

“The ads we select may be based on your current location, search query, or the content you are viewing. Other ads are targeted based on your likely interests or other information that we learn about you over time using demographic data, search queries, interests and favorites, usage data, and location data.”

Myerson also claims that emails, messages and personal files will not be scanned for the purposes of advertising, yet this extract from MS privacy statement suggests otherwise:

“To enable Cortana to provide personalised experiences and relevant suggestions, Microsoft collects and uses various types of data, such as your device location, data from your calendar, the apps you use, data from your emails and text messages, who you call, your contacts and how often you interact with them on your device. Cortana also learns about you by collecting data about how you use your device and other Microsoft services, such as your music, alarm settings, whether the lockscreen is on, what you view and purchase, your browse and Bing search history, and more.”

The bit about view and purchase, and browse history suggests a commercial bent to me.  Oh, and then there's the bit about  "no personal data"  being collected.  Yeah, right!:

“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to […] protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services.”

In MS's own words, the very opposite can and will happen, so-say in the interests of the common good.  Transparency was never MS' strong suit, and even now it claims to be transparent, they've made a complete mess of it.... saying one thing but meaning and/or doing another.  That for me places serious questions about MS' honesty and integrity.  Do we read the privacy agreement and understand that MS intends to harvest personal data for personal gain?  Or do we believe the MS spokesperson who's in damage control?  I certainly could not place any faith in what Mr. Myerson has said, nor has what he said convinced me to install Win 10 on any of my machines.

If anything, his attempt at damage control makes me even more resolute [suspicious, even].  No, the somewhat murky waters are far from being clarified.  For many they are even more confusing.... muddier, even.
