Ramblings of an old Doc

Again! Lenovo actually did it again!

If their rep wasn’t gone the last time, they’ve gone and shoveled the last bit of dirt and filled the grave.

Not gonna detail it…just read it and weep.

“Lenovo used a utility it called Lenovo Service Engine in the BIOS of some products that downloaded a program called OneKey Optimizer to user systems and sent "non-personally identifiable system data" to Lenovo servers.

What makes this particularly worrisome is that Windows files were overwritten on boot, that files were added to the Windows system32 directory, and that a service was set up on the system to transfer the data to Lenovo.

The collected data, according to Lenovo, consists of machine type and model, a system UUID, region and date. Once the data has been submitted successfully the service is automatically disabled on the system. Since the tool is based in the BIOS, it will do its work even if the Lenovo machine is formatted and Windows is installed cleanly afterwards.” – gHacks

Sounds like malware installed with some program or another...or he didn't uncheck an option in a downloaded "free" bundled program.

Not really the same as what Lenovo did.

I'll stick with my Toshiba thanks.

nah. not malware i don't think. ran malwarebytes and it got rid of some pup. think it's part of the bloatware that came with the machine. because it got changed again later on (think after some bloatware update) and malwarebytes didn't find anything.

not on the same scale, but essentially the same crap. oems installing all sorts of rubbish and trying their best to make sure you can't get rid of them. this one uses ms anti-theft measures to do it.

and there i was thinking of buying a machine with no hdd/ssd and install my own os.... let's hope they don't fiddle with the bios

If I ever buy a Lenovo, feel free to shoot me.

Does this apply if I buy one and have it shipped to you?

I suspect no ammo will be endangered by this post.
