As I mentioned before...WHEN there's a class action suit against them for system failure or file loss due to 'mandatory' update imposition you will see a total arse-about by MS.

Well we all expected it to happen at some point.  I'll have to admit though - the speed and efficiency they've demonstrated in mucking it up is truly impressive. 

I forced them to give me free support when a mandatory update prevented my machine from booting up.  Fortunately, the damage wasn't permanent.

I have been fighting a Windows Update failure on my Windows 8.1 tablet through 3 factory resets. WU works fine, up to a point. I wonder if this is part of my troubles......hmmmm

I read an article that suggests MS wants Win 10 on a billion devices by 2018, but I seriously doubt it will reach that target if this mandatory update thing isn't dumped ASAP.  I've only spoken with a few people about it, but all of those who understood the implications/consequences suggested an upgrade to Win 10 would not be on the cards for them... not unless MS backtracked on this 'mandatory' policy.

I will upgrade on one [not-so-important] machine to see what all the fuss is about, but I will maintain my primary machines with Win 8.1 until I'm satisfied Win 10 is safe to install/run.  If it is then I'll take it from there, though I would likely want to keep one rig running Win 8.1.  Hopefully Stardock has all the customisation tools ready to dress Win 10 properly... cos its current wardrobe [GUI] is butt ugly and in serious need of tossing out.  But then, MS never could get a GUI right.

Actually, I will probably "upgrade" (?) one of my 8.1 rigs that has at least 10 GB ram, a 6 core CPU, an SSD, and a high mid range gfx card (in it's day), just to compare to 8.1 with the same hardware. Keep the other 3 with same hardware as 8.1, at least until I can get a feel for 10.

I have 4 rigs with the exact same hardware other than mobo. So I should get a good comparison. 4 of my rigs have 6 core AMD CPUs ( 2x 1045T, 1 x 1055T, and 1 x 1075T.), 120 GB SSDs, and comparable gfx cards, ( 2 X GTS 450, and 1 X GTX 650). I have a core i7 rig with a GTX 560 twin but it's on a locked down mobo.

Which should I put 10 on? I'm thinking one of the 6 core AMDs, so I can compare with 8.1 on same hardware. What do you think, Mark?

why the hell was it autoupdating 3rd party stuff like drivers in the 1st place? at least there's now a hide update thing.

I'd probably put 10 on on of the AMD x6's, myself... say the least important one in terms of backing up, etc.  That way it's less work and easier to undo if it doesn't pan out. 

Me, I have either a Pentium 2nd Gen, with 16gb Ram,  a GTX 560 and a 240gb SSD... or an AMD x6 1150T, 16gb RAM, 120gb SSD and a GTX260 or a 8800GT.  Either machine will do as neither has anything on it ATM, just old [unused] XP from the dinosaur age... I'll just make a decision as to which one on the day.

Win 10 is more a 'Thelma and Louise' way to go....
