The Cubs announced Ernies' death Friday night, but did not provide a cause…it doesn’t really matter why (just hope it was without pain).
No drama player…19 seasons between first base and shortstop, 1953-1971, 512 homers, 1,259 games. Eleven timers an all-star, also selected for the All-Century team in 1999. That kinda says it all…except that he owns just about all the Cubs’ slugging records, and also won the Golden Glove in 1960.
Warm hearted, good guy, optimistic…Hall of Famer, Medal of Freedom recipient in 2013 along with Bill Clinton and Oprah Winfrey. Mr. Cub…Mr. Sunshine. Started his career with KC in the Negro League…was the Cubs’ first African-American player.
Number 14. Retired the number in 1982 and has a statue outside Wrigley Field in 2008.
Bye, Ernie. Thanks…and a well earned Rest In Peace.
