Ramblings of an old Doc

I think I’ve scooped the web on this one.

Updated BitDefender Internet Security (I have that set on manual update) on one computer and when navigating to Outlook.com I get the error message:

“Error code: ERR_CONNECTION_RESET”

I’ve reported it to them. We’ll see how long it takes to get it fixed.

Haven’t updated the other computer and I can navigate and logon just fine.

Sooo: If you’re using BitDefender on more that one machine and have an Outlook account, please change your update settings on your other machines to manual and turn off the “Auto Pilot”.

Well maybe that is what has been going on with my Outlook 2010 I have used since it came out. About every hour the small window that contains my user name and password pop ups on the screen. Now I have to click on save information and click OK. Really a pain because if I don't see the open window I don't receive and email till I give it permission.

I contacted them, and they recommended I uninstall BitDefender (they're sending me a new 2015 sub... ).

I uninstalled it and *poof - I could connect to Outlook.com. Guess that proves it.

I recommend you give them a call - their phone is  954.928.2780.

Did they suggest you then used Kaspersky instead? ....

Why would anyone recommend Russians?

DrJBHL

Why would anyone recommend Russians?

Cos I'm still quite happy with Kaspersky....and I DID switch to them from Bitdefender when the latter was too slow releasing a Win 7 compatible ver ....

kaspersky is a bit quirky with its upgrades (full, subversion.. but not "patch versions") ... as in.  you have to manually nip over to their site to get the downloader instead of having it done via its updater... what year are we in??

then again i get it for free... and its not bad (aside from really slow starts for firefox esp with the plugins)

that aside.. they just killed 1 ms site? how? blacklisted it? bit drastic to have to uninstall the thing as a solution.

No problems with the new one at all, and it's got a better interface, too.

I'm sure they're getting a solution ready, but it was interesting as they hadn't had any complaints according to Stefan (nice fellow I spoke with...didn't hurt that I knew a few words in Romanian).

It just can't coincidence that a bit later I found on MS hotmail forum the exact same problem posted on 1/5/2015 and error code described by fellow who was an engineer, and who found that the solution was uninstalling the old BitDefender and installing 2015.

Incidentally, Outlook.com was designed by clods. If you need help and can't logon, you're really SOL. There's a way to report a problem as "other" but without your return email. There's no phone number. "Support" is a bunch of "FAQs" which answer nothing but know how to ask if their FAQ answered your question.

Let me tell you: Stardock's Support is solid gold and BitDefender's (talked with them once before on a license issue) is as well. It takes a thirsty man to appreciate water properly.

[and Stefan...mulțumesc mult!].

When my Subscription for Symantec AV does expire i might give it a shot.
Doc could you tell me how it performs in speed please,  they say it would have the lowest impact on Performance but most tests i see show different results.
Not sure what package you use urself but i plan on using AV only, these normaly do include protection against injectors or droppers so i dont see the need for the full package,  i would not make use of half the tools in the other packages.

benmanns... they just gave me BD Internet Security 2015 Build 18.20.0.1429.

The Photon scan seems pretty fast to me... of course, it's the only one I have, so comparing is moot...

Thanks Doc.
I was asking since most online test do vary that much that they seem set up.
Anyway, contacted them and they redirected me to the AV2015 trial will test it this weekend i guess

isn't 'testing' AV software sort of akin to 'testing' insurance policies?  In that one won't really know how 'good/bad' it is until needed

...

unless when you say 'testing' you actually mean testing the AV software detection-rate, false-positive potential etc. etc........in which case......carry on nothing to see here!

what did you think haha - that i install it and wait for something bad to happen
I will throw the simple EICAR test file at it and place some actual nastys from a CD on my disk and launch them.
Then i will run a single scan in safemode and see what it finds.
Symantec is stopping me from using them and deletes them before i can launch them, since due the reputation center.
