First of all, it’s in Beta, but supposedly runs just fine but only for Chrome, and Chrome based browsers.

I agree with Martin Brinkmann that this should only be used as a last resort, if only because Google doesn’t list exactly which programs it scans for and removes. It does it for those it considers “suspicious”.

The ‘If nothing else works to remove the redirecting software’ (both types) and if resetting the browser hasn’t done it, then after backing up the browser and creating a restore point, then gHacks is recommending to download the tool (from the official download page HERE: https://www.google.com/chrome/srt/),:

1. Download the program from the official download page.
2. After you have downloaded it and created backups of your data, run it.
3. The program does not require installation and can be run right away after the download completes.
4. It will either display that it did not found anything suspicious, or list the programs that it found to be suspicious.
5. Click on remove suspicious programs and wait for the removal complete message.
6. Note that some programs may be closed by the process.
7. The program submits data to Google unless you uncheck the box on the results page.
8. Click on continue to exit the program. The button may also state restart to reboot the system if that is necessary.
9. When you open Chrome the next time, it will display the reset dialog which you can follow.

Also, It doesn’t do a security software type of virus scan for all types of viruses, only the “typical malware”.

My thoughts?

1. If you don’t really need it, don’t download it.
2. If you can wait for the RTM, then do so.
3. Try a herdProtect scan first before trying this tool which is in beta. Make a post in Forums here, or in a Security Software Forum, asking for help.
4. If you’ve tried literally everything, and nothing has worked, then try it after doing 5.
5. First back up your data, and create a restore point.
6. Then, hold your breath and do it. Just be prepared to restore your system.
7. Next time, avoid getting into this fix. Some common sense is better than all the security software in the world:

“If a user cannot distinguish between a legitimate link and a malicious one (click on this link and a Nigerian prince will send you $10 million US Dollars for safe keeping), then this is without doubt the biggest problem.”
