Meetup, Mozilla, Reddit, Etsy and Kickstarter and other big website owning net neutrality backers will be displaying the dreaded large spinning wheel (‘Please wait – site loading’) this Wednesday, five days before the FCC second round deadline for public comments.
This will be to show folks how their net will look if the FCC doesn’t pass strong net neutrality regulations.
The point being without those regulations, the web will develop ‘fast’ (higher fee) lanes and ‘slow’ peon lanes. Along with that, more cost for bandwidth users and higher prices for say, Netflix type sites. Also, inhibiting the development of the web and innovative tech along with new companies.
More biggies partcipating? OK. Wordpress, Vimeo, BoingBoing and BitTorrent, the ACLU, Common Cause, the EFF, Engine Advocacy and the Free Press Action Fund.
There’s some humor in all this: Pornhub, YouPorn and other pr0n sites will display a big, in your face (flash) message that will have to be closed to watch the pr0n. Any guesses how many picoseconds that message will be open?
So who opposes the reclassification of broadband under Title II? TechFreedom does. Its financial backers are Google, Facebook, Comcast and the National Cable and Telecommunications Association. Surprised? They claim it’ll lead to years of lawsuits challenging the FCC’s authority to do so. Why? They don’t want “heavy handed government control of the Internet”, Berin Szoka, president, TechFreedom.
Perhaps, but I suspect that these folks who sell Internet connections and those who mine and peddle your data have other, less altruistic motives: Pecuniary, to be exact.
Just my opinion.
