Ramblings of an old Doc

One of the most annoying things tied into computer usage is the USB plug and socket…and trying to figure out which way is up. Some plugs have the USB symbol which helps, but now there’s a faster and “indifferent” plug and cable.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group has finalized the USB Type-C specs which will define the next generation of USB connectors which is tailored to fit mobile device product designs, yet robust enough for laptops and tablets.

“Interest in the USB Type-C connector has not only been global, but cross-industry as well,” said Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 Promoter Group Chairman. “Representatives from the PC, mobile, automotive and IoT industries have been knocking down our door anticipating this new standard. This specification is the culmination of an extensive, cooperative effort among industry leaders to standardize the next generation USB connector as a long-lasting, robust solution.”

“The USB Type-C specification defines the physical USB Type-C cable and connector form factor along with the functional requirements for detecting and managing USB connections over an extensible wiring architecture. This new cable and connector supports USB performance at SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps (USB 3.1) and USB Power Delivery up to 100W.” – Business Wire

To be clear, there aren’t any devices with the plugs for this yet, but they’re coming and as a standard plug. What’s the the good (beyond the specs)? They’ll be cheaper than Thunderbolt.

Here’s what it’ll look like (photo credit USB 3.0 Promoter Group via Engadget):

... will there be usb 3.1 Keyboards and mices or usb 2.0+3.0 adapters for 3.1 ? (have mine attached on an usb 1.1 port and its enough    )..

The new standard will be incorporated into new versions of various devices over time and no doubt third-party adapters will be available for use with 2/3 devices.  However, wireless being so prevalent with keyboards & mice, not to mention printers, I don't feature folks going back to cables for those, even the new standard.  Furthermore, there would be nothing to gain by using a type-c cable between legacy devices that lack the ability to utilize the new features.  USB3 cables will be around for quite a while.

Once the ports & capabilities are incorporated into PC's & peripherals, the type-c cable will be nice since it will be fully reversible (both rotation & direction) & you won't have to think about orientation at all.  Its power capabilities will be where it shines.

I think There will be adapters made, Daiwa to bridge between the new and older stuff...although I'm not sure they'll be worth it.

They've already been spec'd and will certainly be produced.  Like you, I'm not sure of their value until & unless USB3 cables become scarce, since the technical improvements will only impact devices capable of using them.  At least, that's my understanding.  Besides, when's the last time you had a USB cable go bad?  They say it happens, but it has to be rare.

I don't see a problem with the current USB cable design.  I almost always get it facing the correct way the second time I try.

Yes....like finding things that you have lost.....they're always in the last place you look.

You'd think it'd save a heck of a lot of time if you just looked in the last place first.....

^Tru dat.

Actually it's a good deal more than just the "Which side is up?" - which could, I suppose be especially problematic 'down under'...never mind.

In truth?  The plug was invented just so Tech Support Centers all over the planet could get on with things when Aussies called up (or down) (also cut the suicide rates among tech support workers).

The data transfer rate? Purely incidental. Pay it no mind.

^^

I don't know for certain but unless the two pieces of hardware being connected are capable of those transfer rates, a type-C cable is of no benefit.  I don't think the current USB3 cable is a 'bottleneck'.

Great!

I don't think the current USB3 cable is a 'bottleneck'.

Depends on the amount of data being blown across, I suppose...if we're talking about cloning a drive/s, it could be.

I like the plug itself, though (and remember a discussion about it...just couldn't find it). I hate the ritual of gently trying it in multiple directions...always makes me feel totally klutzy.

Yeah, i face this problem everyday at least once . Do think USBV 3.1 will be great when its used by many devices. Hope that there will be cheap wired devices such as keyboards mices, color laser printers, scanners  etc with USB3.1 in 3-4 years ( please not sooner ..) .

I hate wireless devices ( tried them a lot some years ago  and they got so fast over used, as quickly as  usb 4-1 adapters/hubs. ( and some wireless devices are using batteries ( not so nice when they get to old ...) )= )= ).
