Ramblings of an old Doc

The first is an adaptable start screen. MS has learned from its faux pas with Windows 8. W9 will adapt itself to whatever you happen to be running it on: If a keyboard and mouse are attached, then W9 (codenamed “Threshold”) will give you the desktop mode. If not, and if you have a touch enabled device, W9 will load the mobile mode.

The second: The Start Menu is coming back. The elimination of the Start Menu was a blunder on MSs part. Perhaps the worst of those tied to W8. So, a brand new Start Menu is coming. The right half is the mobile app mode, the left half being the old desktop type menu, as you can see below:

This will allow you to open the mobile apps while W9 won’t ‘forget’ you’re in the desktop mode.

The third thing is that there’s a rumor that it might be free for users of W8.1 Update2. I wouldn’t bet on it, though…if only because W8 was such a money loser. W8.1 Update2 will happen in August. Also, W9 might happen at year’s end, but more likely in April 2015.

Well, at least that's some advance towards normalcy, but I sure hope you can turn off those "mobile apps" showing on the start menu and go back to a places panel, and by the looks of it the user icon may be gone, yes!

Just by the pic, I prefer 8.

From what I have read on other sites and blogs the rationale for MS in making Windows 9 free for Win 8 and even Win 7 SP1 users is an attempt to get folks to upgrade to the newest OS and not have to worry about providing support to older OS's.  I really don't think it will happen but a very inexpensive upgrade, like what was offered when Win 8 was released just might.

I never upgraded to Windows 8 but that start menu needs to drop that Metro/Modern look.  Just have to keep in mind that this may not be what Windows 9 Desktop looks like in the final release.  (Fingers crossed)

The screeny pic above is the worst nightmare ever ^ half/half is the most horrible a smart thing would be to let the user choose what startmenu they want, even though some might like the modern apps in their SM i think it is just not the right menu for it, i prefer the win8 start over this tiny menu ande seeing the modern apps cramped in it gives me the chills...  If there will be no option to choose the standart win7 or win8 startmenu ill stick with 8 until another number keeps knocking on the door.

I have windows 7 and I want to upgraded should I wait for windows 9 or instaled windows 8.1

on Jul 22, 2014

bleumart, if I were you, I'd wait for WIndows 9...and not the first day, either. I'd wait until some respectable reviewers go over it for pluses and minuses.

No doubt folks will come along and voice their opinion in answer to your question but only you can answer the question.

If Windows 7 is allowing you to do what you need to do on your computer then what advantage will you have in installing a new OS?

There is enough information available to help you in deciding whether upgrading to Windows 8.1 will improve your computing experience.

Information is just now becoming available as to what Windows 9 (Threshold) will bring to the desktop.

If I may suggest, if you haven't upgraded from Windows 7 yet and you aren't changing anything on your computer you just may want to wait awhile and see what unfolds as Windows 9 gets closer to being released.

Just my opinion.

A lot of good information stated above about what should one do as far as upgrading. Stardock has done a great job making win8 look as close to win7 as possible. That half and half SM  showing on win9 isn't for me. If it were to stay that way could SD be able to make a regular SM. Only time will tell that.

You want Metro by all means upgrade. You want win8 using Statdock software go for it. I decided awhile ago to wait for win9 so now I just have to wait to see the final product. I'm not knocking win8 or the upcoming win9. Just saying i'm happy with win7 and maybe win9 will be the one I upgrade to. Time will tell.

Looks like another O/S that needs some skinning to make it palatable.

on Jul 22, 2014

If i want to be actuel with windowblind and give to public a quality in skin,I think that I have no choice to follow the move

I'm in the doute because peoples seems not to like windows 8

I highly doubt they will be giving away free copies of win9. M$ is too big a company to think in those circles. It'd be like a car company giving away free cars, not because there were some fatal accidents with previous versions, but because some people weren't quite happy.

No Borg Edition, no upgrade.

If you have 7 [and it's running fine] you have exactly zero reason to move to 8 [for the short time it would be 'current'].  Just wait for 9.

So basically Windows 8 + Object Desktop.
