So…Intel’s newest and thinnest (thinner than an iPad) Broadwell processor powered (“Llama Mountain”) tablet made its prototype appearance. The name is from its newest processor the new 14nm Core M (Broadwell) processor to enable thinner, fanless convertible devices. Being fanless, thin is the word.
This hybrid is the thinnest and lightest yet: 7.2mm (0.28 inch), the slate is thinner than the iPad Air (7.5mm), and it's also significantly lighter than two-in-one devices already on the market; it's a notebook-class PC running Windows 8.1 Pro, yet it weighs just 1.47 pounds, compared to 1.76 pounds for the Surface Pro 3.
The Broadwell-K is expected late this year because new mother boards with different power sockets will be needed. The Broadwell is a 14 nM chip compared to the 22 nM Haswell and will need about 30% less power.
Next target? Batteries. When they are improved to yield a longer period between charges, tablet and hybrid users will really have reason to celebrate.
