Ramblings of an old Doc

Well, Google wants to know more and more and push their ads so their latest is (while possibly useful for some) a tad over the top for me.

I’m referring to the possibility (if you are on Google Plus) for anyone who has you in his circles to email you even without knowing your email address. To me this just opens too many possible nasty doors. Granted, if you don’t wish to answer, the sender will never know your gmail address. That won’t stop the spam, though (nor possible phishing/spear-phishing). Only by changing the settings (link below) can you do that.

So, how does one “opt out”?

Simple! Go to this address: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?shva=1#settings/general

Change as in screen shot, then save (at bottom of settings page).

I don't have a Google+ account...

... is what I thought until Google randomly decided to create one a few months back (out of my gmail account? my iGoogle account? who knows). With this and the fact that they can use any info you upload in advertisements, well, it seems like they're trying to hammer in that last nail.

That was part of what Google "gives" you even if you didn't ask for it.

There are four more settings you might wish to opt out of:

Actually what I want to opt out of is Google+. At least that was fairly easy. Google are quickly becoming masters at making me not use their stuff.

Does it also affect yahoo mail? I don't use gmail.

No, Uvah. This only has to do with Google+ and Gmail. If you have a Google account, you might want to look at the link in reply #2.

Funny thing you say this, I didn't have a Google+ account, either..  However, in order to access the Google apps store on my tablet, I had to create a G-mail account.... and now I too have a Google+ account I didn't create/ask for..

Oh well, no skin off my nose!  I never use G-Mail or Google+, so however they are connected, and no matter who sends what to either one, I won't be bothered by any of it.

I never trusted anything Google and never will.  Had I not ended up with an Android tablet I very much doubt that I would have an email account with them.

This is sad. I really like and PREFER G+ to FB because Google hasn't been playing these kinds of games...at least not with the frequency that FB does. I also like that G+ doesn't have all the annoying game invites/spam and all the other crap that has turned FB into MYSPACE without the gif/bling. The G+ pages are just so 'clean' and uncluttered compared to FB. I hope this doesn't become the new trend on G+.

I have been hoping the day would come (and soon) that FB finally screwed itself and it's users one too many times and people flocked to G+. What's really funny is that the 'kids' (according to stats) have fled  or dropped FB and it's mostly middle aged folks on it now. When I hear that, I just shake my head and wonder 'Why?'. I would think mature adults would tolerate all the damn spam and stuff that is all over FB a lot less than the kids.

Heh, I went to FB once, to sign up... haven't been back since.   I had family members and a few other people suggest that I go on Facebook to keep in touch and vice versa, but it's just not my thing. If they want me or vice versa, there's always the phone or email. Besides, with all the privacy concerns and other complaints I keep hearing about, FB is not a destination I'll go to anyhow.

As for the spam, it could get really annoying, but all mail from FB goes straight to my junk mail and is deleted with one click on 'Empty Junk Mail Folder', so I don't even see it anymore. One time I checked there were 47 emails from FB in just a couple of days, usually asking if I knew this or that person... I didn't, so deleted the lot.  I don't bother checking any more.  Nothing else goes to that folder so I empty it without even opening it,
