Ramblings of an old Doc

The other shoe has fallen, and it turns out Target’s assurances were pretty worthless.

The data thieves also swept up names, addresses and phone numbers in addition to the credit and debit card and PIN data.

That (besides being data for sale), also adds info for identity thieves looking to impersonate the theft victims. Face it…with name, telephone number PIN, card number and address…this just became a lot easier.

Oh yes…and that 40,000,000? There’s a new, additional group of 70,000,000 some of whom might also have had their card data stolen, have had their personal information compromised, as well.

So, Target’s earnings are down, profits are down, sales are expected to decrease by 2.5%…there are two class action law suits, and there may be prosecutions as well.

Well, data breaches are so common at this point, that it makes one wonder if a totally new method of security needs to be found.

American Express and Chase have reissued debit cards…but that just opens another window: Phishing. If I were you, I wouldn’t be opening any emails purporting to be from banks or credit card companies, since they might be looking for even more info…like your Social Security number.

Another good reason not to have anything out there. People can't steal what you don't have.

So true, Uval, and its another reason to use cash, and not debit/credit cards. All this electronic infrastructure just makes it way too easy for thieves to nail you from a distance. Taking your physical cash requires a more 'personal' touch, and seems a lot less likely to occur now. There was a time when credit card use meant special protections, return of defective products etc. Nowadays, all that seems moot.

You are a wealth of happy news.  Whatever happened to "Happy new Year"???

But thanks for the update.  I had actually already read about it, but you are usually the first place I find out about such stuff.

The data of over 100 MILLION people ???

As an IT "professional" I'm positively impressed.

More of these types of events and people won't trust internet sites anymore...

Those assholes.

*flushing* my job down the toilet.

Today's news on this comes via McAfee.

Apparently very difficult to detect code infected the point of service devices at Target, and appear to have parts coded in Russian reminiscent of code used in Russian malware pointing to possible ties to Russian organized crime.

Apparently a Russian Teen created the code, but they do not know who loaded it.
