Ramblings of an old Doc

Well, that brings it to 22 ‘Critical’ patches this year. There is one “Important” patch for Windows Defender.

It’s important to get these patches, as they involve (for IE) zero day remote code execution holes. For Windows Defender, the fix is for an “elevation of privilege” issue.

Here’s the summary:

You can review the actual bulletin here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms13-jul

This is one you really have to do.

Do I still need the updayes if I don't ever use IE and have Windows Defender disabled?

Kona...no.  If they say they are updates for IE and Defender then you obviously would NEED to actually be using the programs.

If there was an update for Autodesk Revit would you think you needed it? ....

Don't certain other programs 'use' IE for certain purposes, even if you don't choose to use it as your default browser?

That is a good point, I know my UPS Worldship software always uses IE when it is going to use the web. Doesn't matter what the default browser is set as.

Apps can also use components of IE, not just the browser itself. So even if you don't use IE for the web it's worth treating it as another part of the OS. For example, programs that auto-update software may use the same HTTP routines as IE and share the same 'Internet Options'.

IMO, it would be wise to patch IE, and its components, so that other apps aren't vulnerable.
