Ramblings of an old Doc

Would be nice, right? Well, it’s been around for a while. The gamma-knife. High energy radiation.

But what if there was an alternative without radiation? What if you could operate on a brain without opening the skull?

The complications like infection and the cost of that surgery and hospital stays would be far fewer and shorter.

Well, Insightec is doing just that with MRI guided high-intensity ultrasound technology.

In fact, there are centers in Europe and the Americas already hard at work relieving the pain from bone metastases (cancer which has spread to the bone), and destroying uterine fibroids without surgery and without removing the uterus.

In fact, there have been patients with Familial Tremor who have been returned to normal immediately upon receiving treatment.

What is so great is that non ionizing radiation (in the form of ultrasound) won’t expose the patient to any cancer linked radiation. The ultrasound energy does its work by destroying the offending tissue with thermal energy.

The benefits:

  • Short recovery time, fast symptom relief
  • Non-invasive, non-ionizing treatment with minimal discomfort and trauma
  • One session, drug-sparing, no hospitalization
  • No incisions, scars, post-operative complications or long-term consequences
  • Preserving fertility, sexual function, continence, aesthetics

You can read about the current applications here: http://us.insightec.com/ExAblate-uterine-fibroids.html

and here: http://us.insightec.com/bone-mets-pain-reduction.html

There are also videos at the foot of this page: http://us.insightec.com/

What is so interesting is that from diagnosis to ultimate treatment the body is not invaded. I like that.

Also, the treatment of epilepsy and all sorts of other illnesses might be far better accomplished this way than by traditional surgery.

I had two c-sections and an appendectomy years ago...the scars are long and visible. In 2006 I had my gall bladder out, but with that one, I have 3 smallish scars, nothing like years before. I don't have a problem with the scars, as far as aesthetics, but I know the scars inside there could be a problem in the future. So this "MRI guided high-intensity ultrasound technology" would be so much better, like you said.

Excellent post Seth!!!

I am amazed at how we are getting so many better tools and using them for surgery and health. I am beginning to understand what Bones meant (on an old episode of the original Star Trek series) when he said something like "... fungascoptic (fundoscopic?) surgery? that's barbaric! " What wonderful things we can do when we decide to make life better.

It was "Fundoscopy" (observing the retina through the cornea), and "Brain surgery".

"Savages".

My knee and back operations are hardly visible, but...

...the one on my leg goes from 3" above the knee to the ankle - can't really hide that

...One of mine was vertical, the other horizontal....go figure!   Of course I have two children, so it makes those scars worthwhile, I think!

Fuzzy Logic

You could decorate it with a tattoo...or not!

I would have loved this medical tech to have been available when my leg was being reassembled after some tw*t ran me off the road...

My scars [there's several of them side by side] start above the hip and end just above the knee.  However, there are several pits where sutures had to be removed when I got golden staph.  One is so deep my index finger disappears just past the 1st knuckle.

I also have a scar on my right arm that's almost a half inch wide.... nearly tore my arm off at the elbow... took some major surgery to rebuild it also.

And my other major that looks f**kin' awful is the one on my gut.  It's about 8 inches long and almost a half inch wide.... an appendectomy that began as an exploratory to determine the cause of swelling and discomfort.

I have several others but those 3 are the worst.
