Ramblings of an old Doc

News flash Yahoo email was hacked.

How can you check to see if your account was among them?

Check out this ghacks.net article:

http://www.ghacks.net/2013/03/07/how-to-check-your-account-recent-yahoo-login-activity/?_m=3n%2e0038%2e814%2ehj0ao01hy5%2eu3p

Let’s say you have been. What should you do?

“Many secure websites include a mechanism to reset a forgotten password by sending a special link to your email account of record. A malefactor in control of your email could submit a lost password request to dozens of banks and other sensitive sites, hoping for a few hits. If your email is compromised you need to change the password immediately—if you can.”- http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2403134,00.asp

But…

"You may find that the hacker has already locked you out by changing the account's password. In that case you need high-level help from your email provider. You'll have to prove to the provider that you're the real account owner. Depending on your provider, the process may be easy or difficult. Stick with it no matter what. If you don't regain control of your email, anything else you do toward recovery can be undone just as easily." - ibid.

So, what should you do?

  1. Scan your computer with updated security software, use several apps to scan. Use ones which specialize in “cleanup”.
  2. Update your OS and drivers, from OEM’s/MS. Check those links!
  3. Get a password manager like LastPass (yes, it was hacked in the past, but it’s much more secure now).
  4. Change your password and browsing habits.
  5. Update your browsers and plugins/extensions from primary sources only.
  6. Keep your passwords private, trust no one with them.

Thanks for the heads up Doc. I checked and it looks like I dodged the bullet this time. I just changed my password last month due to unauthorized activity on my account. Yahoo needs to step up their security measures.

Ditto what Wizard1956 said.  Really appreciate the heads up!

My pleasure, fellas.

Thanks Doc.

I saw your post and changed my password. TWO MINUTES after I did, I got an email from a friend with a CC to people that I know are her friends, but she has never emailed me and them together before. I click on the link, because this is the second email I have received from her today; it appeared to be an art website, which is not unusual for her. I click...and WOT tells me that this site is unsafe and that I should go back. I am running a MalwareBytes scan on my PC right now and I sent her the link you provided us.

Thanks again.

You're welcome.

You might find Windows 8 to be a more secure OS for you if only because it has Metro - nidazole, flagyl.

The name was NOT chosen as a result of 'unfortunate social interactions'.

I graduated from Pritzker. .

Great! So nice to meet you! Really glad The article did some good!    - Me? Graduated Sackler.

Was just playing on the name and Windows 8. Couldn't resist the pharmacological pun... they occur so rarely.

As you know, it is used for other several other purposes (immune modulation, and others such as PMEC and Rosacea, and is of use in IBD).

Very cool .

Yes; I needed a name for my internet travels, and this was the drug requested by surgeons prior to any belly case. I got so used to hearing it and it was unique, so I went with it...sometimes to my chagrin .

I'm still Win 7 at the moment .

Yes... infections below the diaphragm and anaerobes: Flagyl is excellent.

Keep Windows 7. However, if you're thinking of going over to Windows 8, Stardock makes some excellent apps to regain some of the Windows 7 features you like to use: Start 8, Decor 8 and MetroMix to name some... other apps from Object Desktop (ODNT) are being worked on as we speak: Windowblinds 8, and others. Deskscapes8 is now out as well.

I was wondering how many folks even use it anymore. My wife has a Yahoo account, but that's just so she can play their games. Other than that, the only reason I would have one is for throw away sites and stuff.

I think a poll on what email providers people use would be interesting.

Thanks Doc. The bullet missed me this time. BH. Immediately changed my passwords. As always, you are the best. Like your (new to me) avatar.
