Ramblings of an old Doc

There’s a really great series of totally free Photoshop basics tutorials on psdtuts+ , for those interested in learning the basics or just brushing up on stuff not used in a while.

They are taught by Martin Parhiniak who is a graphics designer and Certified Expert Design Master by Adobe where he worked for three years.

Anyway, Martin’s vids are free on the website: http://psd.tutsplus.com/sessions/photoshop-basix/

What’s really nice about these vids is that they are 5-10 minutes in length and cover 25 topics starting with “Your First Rendezvous With Photoshop” and going through a wide variety of subjects: Layers, masks, Bridge, etc.

Mr. Parhiniak is originally from Hungary, so he does have a slight accent in his English (which is excellent) but he’s very easily understood.

Enjoy!

Thanks for this Seth. I loved the broadcast last year by Lesa Snyder but got into sooooo much trouble with my ISP for the amount of bandwidth used! Hope these will be short enough not to cause an uproar! God, do I wish cable would come to the boonies!

Glad you folks like the tuts. Frankie, tell your ISP from me to fold it into triangles and shove it up sideways.

Get satellite. You'll never see cable. Those cruds invest zero in the infrastructure, and the pols don't understand that they could create a zillion jobs just dealing with infrastructure and renting it to the ISPs "in the name of the people"... probably turn a nice profit and lower taxes.

Thanks for asking my opinion.

Well , I went to the site and wasn't able to access any videos. Got an audio , but no video display.

I watched 2 vids, Ace... no problems.

Seth, I do have satellite but am limited to 17GBs a month which, trust me isn't very much. I use a monitor and allocate myself 567 mgs a day but it is real easy to go over that just doing everyday things. I did go and watch one video on "masking" as I am trying to find a good tut to send to a friend. It only took me from 103mbs to 128 mbs so I would say it is safe for me to watch a few per day. The same month I did the PhotoLesa thing, I downloaded PS6 beta so all in all, I used about 5 GBs in a couple of days and got a "fair usage" notice from Wildblue!

Really obnoxious, no?

Lesa has tutorial articles describing what she does on Photolesa.com . Also, if you get her book (CS5 or CS6), she explains totally everything in a way (with screen shots) you'll get it very quickly, and files for download to do the exercises.

A five to ten minute video would take me about thirty minutes to watch with all the stops and go's. I always get the first two to five seconds then it will stop for about three minutes then another few seconds. Rarely do I get one to play all the way through. I once tried to download one...forget it. The speed went from just over 60kb/s down to less than 1kb/s and all within the first ten seconds. Not worth it, dl'ing I mean. But the tuts are pretty cool.

Apparently some other visitors to the site were having the same problem as I ,judging from their comments. Must be a browser thing or something.       -- Ace --

Pale Moon (Mozilla) works like a charm. Also... make sure your Flash is updated.

Sounds like a connection speed/buffering thing. Mine went straight through. No probs.

Bookmarked the page. Surprisingly enough I got through the first three without a glitch.

ahhhh....figured it out,  I needed to click on compatibility view in IE to display the video player. Now we're good to go.          -- Ace --
