Ramblings of an old Doc

Saw this at The Windows Club, and thought it might interest some.

If you have W8 (x32 or x64) you can now get the WinZip app for free at the Windows Store.

In November, it cost $7.99 (US). So why is MS doing it? Simple. It now offers support for SkyDrive as well as Google Drive cloud services.

It has two new features: ZipSend and ZipShare direct connectivity for file sharing, which allows you to email over sized files to friends and contacts, as well as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

The WinZip features listed (briefly) are:

Features:

  • Open and save .zip and .zipx files
  • Secure confidential files from prying eyes, whether they are sent by email, shared online or stored on your system, with WinZip’s military-grade encryption
  • Easily send large files by email by zipping your attachments first or by using the integrated ZipSend file delivery service
  • Securely share any type of file and rich content on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter using seamless integration with ZipShare
  • Use the Windows 8 ‘Share’ charm to deliver zipped files to your contacts through email, social media or other apps
  • Experience super easy-to-use Windows 8-style interface with touch-friendly features
  • Securely send files to mobile devices with WinZip’s password protection
  • Compress large files, entire folders or archives for faster transfer and to save space on your system

UPDATE (2/10/13):

This just in from gHacks:

"Update: Turns out that the Winzip app is not free after all. It appears that it is free to try for 15 days and then available for a subscription fee of $7.99 per year. Windows Store does not appear to differentiate between the two offer types."

I think that if it were free and you do a lot of zipping on your RT, it might be worth it. However, overall, I think 7zip is just great, and as a matter of fact, I use it and the native DOpus program option almost exclusively.

I will stick with my 7zip thank you. Free Open Source and the best I ever used

7-zip.org

It also opens every archive type I have encountered.

Just a reminder Doc, beware that your post viewed from forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/440124 is black background, I think Galactic Civs is as well. Still readable, but barely.

Don't know what to do about that, myfist0. Maybe there's an option to switch your background?

Not possible. Maybe try not to use black text, and we will try not to use white

green or red or something that is good from all sites, or just bold, italic or something

White text won't work out well from where he is posting.

You need to strip ALL colors out and just let the forum style handle it.

1 thing i don't get...... why would ms have anything to do with the pricing of a product from another company?? (if the original story was true.. as opposed to snafu at the store)

You can easily highlight the text while reading it which makes it easy to read in any color
