Ramblings of an old Doc

OK. Windows 8 isn’t fun to shut down or restart on a tablet. Start 8 is one solution.

Here’s another from Brandon Dimmel at infopackets:

To shut down Windows 8 with one click:

First, get to the main desktop screen.

Next, right click on the desktop and select New --> Shortcut.

When the menu appears, click 'Create new Shortcut.'

When Windows 8 asks you what item you'd like to create a shortcut for, enter the following command: 'shutdown /s /t 0'. (By the way, that's a zero. Also, make sure not to include a period or the quotations.) Then click 'Next.'

Enter a name for the new shortcut ('Shutdown' is a good choice) and click 'Finish.'

Selecting a Shutdown Icon:

Next, right click on your brand new shortcut and then left click on 'Properties.' A new dialog box will appear.

Click 'Change Icon.' When Windows 8 tells you that 'The file C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe contains no icons, click 'OK.'

You'll now be asked to select an icon from a list of images. Pick the one that suits you best.

Once you've done that, right click the shortcut again. Select 'Pin to Start.'

Your new shutdown icon will appear continuously on the operating system's Start screen.

You can repeat all of these steps to create a new Restart shortcut, as well. The only difference: after selecting 'Create new Shortcut' you'll have to enter the command:

shutdown /r /t 0 (zero again) The "r" is for "Restart."

I thought about making a restart/shutdown icon as the OP suggested for Windows 8, but then I thought, noooo, I just be missing it, they surely wouldn't require 4 steps to turn my stupid computer off would they? ....  Guess so.

If you have a keyboard shutting down is no problem at all. Alt-F4 from the desktop brings up the shutdown dialog.

Yeah, so is horseshit....don't ask.

Are we going to have to go back to commands to get things done? Last time I used those was in 1994(on an AppleIIc.)

Phoon, you're awesome, dude!   It even works on XP.

Yeah Wiz.. if one knows kb shortcuts it is devastatingly awesome to watch them navigate an OS.

There is a nifty app in the Windows Store (Free app) called Windows 8 Cheat Keys in case anyone is interested.

Note: To search the Store bring it up, hit WinKey+C to bring up charms bar and just type Windows 8 Cheat in the search box. You will see it.
