Ramblings of an old Doc

Samsung has come out with a $249 Chromebook… it weighs in at 2.43 lbs. (1.1 kg) with an 11.6 in. screen running an ARM processor. ZDNet reviewed it and found outstanding performance and good battery life. The casing is silver colored plastic which “feels sturdy”.

Apple fans are pumped up about "a “little” announcement… the iPad Mini version. It’s supposed to be about 8.4 by 5.7 in. (21.3 cm tall by 14.4 cm wide), with a display probably 7.85 in. Also, supposedly it’ll have an IGZO Sharp screen which can handle a 330 ppi which means it might have a “Retina Display” (no official picture available). The Apple live event will be on Tuesday, the 23rd at 1 pm.

Microsoft will be debuting Windows 8 on October 26th (officially) with its various upgrade versions. The Surface RT preorders started last week online, and the 32 Gb version (not including the cover) for $500 US has sold out in the USA and is already on back order. MS has also opened an online store for China.

Samsung has also come out with something for this coming Wednesday: The Galaxy Note II.

So… should be a very interesting week, folks. Enjoy!

Hank... I'm dying to see the iPad Mini.

Here's an unofficial version:

iPad mini version? You mean an oversized iPod touch that is going to set you back double+ the price of an ipod touch? Apple... Wow. I wonder what else they'll think of to milk money from their customers.

Isn't that the role of every corporation? I don't buy Apple products myself, but if there's a market for small iPads, people will buy them. I didn't know they still sold iPods anymore... I don't think I've seen one in quite a few years (of course they all look alike, right? those special 'rounded corners' and all that...). Aren't they just iPhones with... no ability to make calls? Apple is just cashing in on the blind devotion of their followers, which I think pretty much any other company would do the same.

There's a lot more to the iPad than a large iPhone/iPod.

It works, works well and really, no one's bashing MS... The iPad idea wasn't the product of greed. That others try to emulate it speaks volumes.

Doc, I agree. At one time I bad mouthed Apple / Mac like every other PC fanboy. That day has long passed.

I was given a gen 4 iPad Touch for my birthday last year and was amazed at how it rocked and was a far superior device compaired to my Zune HD.

Fast forward to my wife's birthday...she wanted an iPad so since I love with my very soul, I went againt my oath to never by an Apple product and bought her one. After checking it out and discovering first hand how fine of a device it is, I bought myself one the next day.

Having both devices, I can see that there is a market and a need for the iPad Mini. They will do well with this device and if competativly priced, it will fly off the shelves and will be in short supply. If you want one early, you better reserve one the day it is officially anounced.

Apple has thier shit together on a level that scaring the hell out of Microsoft. They are now trying their best to copy and emulate thier business model in an attempt to gain market share in the tablet / pad market. I hope it works out for them.

Mike...I think The Surface is in competition with Laptops, primarily... As for pads and simple tablets.. Apple still has it cornered. The only competition is the Galaxy S III - and if they can turn that into a real tablet.

And... at one point I bad mouthed them... when I.D. was enthused... and I admitted publicly that I was dead wrong too.
