Ramblings of an old Doc

To paraphrase a disappointed voter from WI, “This is the end of democracy. The end of the USA as we know it.”

Tom and Ray Magliozzi “of Boston (our fair city), MA” as they say it at the end of each “Puzzla (dialect)” are ending their 25 year run on NPR (35 years on WBUR Boston).

Yes, disappointed fans: I can take recessions, depressions, invasions: You name it. I cannot take this piece of ugly, heartbreaking news. This really sucks. First it was Bonanza. Then ST-TOS and every other ST spinoff, Space 2099, BSG (the original) and sequel. "Mt. St. Elsewhere", and "Hill St. Blues" perhaps worst... “NYPD Blue” and NYPD Det. Sgt. Andy Sipowitz.

But ”Car Talk”?!

“HERESY!”

(Wordcredit Snowman)

Cry havoc! and let slip the dogs of war, that this foul deed shall smell above the earth...

(W. Shakespaeare)

The brothers Magliozzi were corny, funny… sentimental (they had their mom on the show one Mother’s Day and she was as funny as them). Despite their jovial demeanor, they solved many a problem for folks calling in. Stands t reason. They both graduated M.I.T. Engineering, and even spoke at an M.I.T. Commencement.

Well to be fair, while Ray is 63, Tom is 75. Time to smell the exhaust pipes… errr… new car. Something like that.

Anyone who listens to NPR to listen to the boys knows what I mean. At least there’ll be reruns (don’t bother calling in) starting this fall. Don’t miss their website has full program recasts (and cd’s of their funniest shows as well as other merchandise for sale).

"Tom: Don’t drive like my brother!

Ray: Don’t drive like mine!"

"Time is a great teacher. Unfortunately, it kills all it's pupils"

Sad to hear the news of the Tappet brothers retiring.

Theyre retiring of old age, and this (partial) info I have from "Ayurveda" may help.

Find a Palash Tree (Butea Monosperma) with a largish trunk. Hollow out the trunk a bit, with a piece of the bark for cover.

Stuff the hollow with Amla (Phyllanthus emblica, Indian gooseberry), cover it with the bark, bandage / strap layers of cloth over the whole thing.

Let it stay that way for a while (dont know how long to keep it, my info is incomplete).

Take out the Amla and consume daily.

The tappet brothers will get their youth back, and we can enjoy them on NPR again (I used to hear them on AFRTC).

ps: If you have lots of cash and dont know what to invest in, why not try the Palash/Amla recipe (after getting some more info on it.. )

I loved listening to them when I was a kid.....even though I didn't care about car repair.

A lot of the charm must have been the dialect (I have an uncle from Boston and I love listening to him talk. Jokes are just funnier in a Boston accent!)
