Ramblings of an old Doc

By now, you should know this is one of my favorite subjects.

Well, this isn’t ready to be tested on human subjects yet, but it is one of the “Grails” Neuroscience has been striving towards for many years.

“Scientists at Northwestern University in Chicago, with funding from the National Institutes of Health, have successfully bypassed the spinal cord and restored fine motor control to paralyzed limbs using a brain-computer interface.” – Sebastian Anthony (Extremetech)

This was done by combining a BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) directly wired into the brain and a functional electrical stimulator (FES) wired into the the muscles of the subject’s arm.

Thus the flow becomes Brain (thought), BCI, FES, muscles, action.

The fine motor control in the monkey's hand is the thing to notice in this video:

This development makes me so happy for people with spinal cord injuries and peripheral nerve injuries.

So much has been done so quickly. Imagine what could be achieved if only governments and people would give up violence.

Some people will say, "poor monkeys, look what they are doing to them for no good reason." I think that many of our animals, if we were able to ask them, would do anything for their people even if it was something possibly life threatening. Including the "poor monkeys."

what the frag does that have to do with giving up violence?

Are you kidding? there are so many awesome ways this techlology could be used for violence! fantastic, sweet violent ways!

Just think (or more accurately imagine) what they will be able to do long after we are gone.  The limit on human genius is only in the imagination.

A lot of hard work and good funding makes all the difference. Good luck to them.

Just a little more and we'll all have a jack in our head to plug directly into hardware...

No, you're right... But at least I don't have Alzheimer's yet. And, at least I don't have Alzheimer's yet.

Oh, and Doc, just in case you forget, at least you don't have Alzheimer's yet.

Nah...he has ADH....oh look...a squirrel......

Nah, but while he neither has ADHD or Alzheimer's, he does have CRAFT disease.  Sure he has some cognitive skills, but he Can't Remember A F'king Thing.

Anyhow, and getting back to the OT, I reckon this BCI technology should be adapted to help with ED [Erectile Dysfunction]

Yeah, I'd really like that idea... to be able to just think about it and bing, bang, pop, he's straining my zipper and is ready for work.

It is just too close to George Reeves (the original Superman).

Quite crafty of starkers to notice.

Afraid this one won't quite measure up to your needs, starkers, old lad.

I think only Wizard will be able to help you, Cap'n.... after all, you did say he has shapely legs.

Nah...he has ADH....oh look...a squirrel......

That's A.D.H.L.A.S. (Attention Deficit Hey Look A Squirrel) syndrome.

Jafo would have completed that except for... A.D.H.L.A.S. (Attention Deficit Hey Look A Spammer) Syndrome.

Bugger, then it's back to the trusty old splints, I guess.
