Ramblings of an old Doc

Not many surprises here except that I don’t really accept their user’s star ratings and what the factors were used in judging are not mentioned.

I also found it quite odd they overlooked Nexus altogether, making me doubt the degree of seriousness of the review. The inclusion criteria were also not listed, nor how software was evaluated. They seemed to feel (as did their users) that Rocket Dock exceeded Object Dock.

The article didn’t state which version (free or paid) was being used in the comparison. I assume it’s the ‘free’ version which would bias the survey, as software developers put more features in the ‘paid’ versions than the ‘free’ ones, and development of the ‘free’ ones generally lags behind the ‘paid’ ones.

That being said, do cruise on over to take a look at which they feel are ‘best’.

Also, “Best Apps” for Mac, iPad, iPhone and Android are there, too.

As usual: Beware packaged apps not from the original dev’s website and don’t choose any “recommended” or “fast” installation. Choose “Advanced” to avoid unwanted software.

I posted a review.

LizMarr, what's the url of the review? I'd enjoy reading it.

Hey! Weird indeed that they overlooked the Winstep Nexus dock (with over 1 million downloads at Download.com, 5 stars from Cnet Editors, 4 and a half stars from users for the current v12.2 version and four stars for all versions, currently #3 in the Desktop Customization area) in favor of RocketDock, which is a great dock, no doubt, but is #6 and, much more important than that, hasn't been updated in four years.

That hurt my feelings... [e digicons]:'([/e]

Politics, I say, politics! lol

Aaaaaaawwww! *strokes Jorge's head*

If it's any consolation, I think Nexus dock is the mutts nuts. And I'll be cheerfully renewing my sub for Nexus Xtreme in a couple of months. That'll be money very well spent IMHO.

Cool, thanks. Now all I need to do is make a product called 'Nexus Xtreme', currently I only have 'Nexus Ultimate' and 'Winstep Xtreme', eheh.

I'll shut up now.

Don't laugh at it. I saw there was a place for reader review so I took advantage off it. Discovered that CNet already had an account for me too. LOL

Hell no! You wrote a great review! Good work Liz.

When did that ever happen?

This is what Jorge was relating to:

on Apr 11, 2012

I didn't see any mention of WindowBlinds or Fences.

Which is pretty odd considering the list in #9 .....

True, but neither Fences nor WindowBlinds are 'launchers and docks'. Fences is a really good organizer, original in what it does *and* it occupies the first position in the Desktop Customization area, so it really should have been mentioned in some other section of that article. WindowBlinds is a classic, so 'nuff said.

Cnet has three docks occupying the top positions: ObjectDock, Nexus and RocketDock. ObjectDock is a very good dock, obviously still alive and kicking and more than deserved being mentioned, but RocketDock, although also a very good dock, is already showing it's age - and development on it stopped completely four years ago.

I just find it odd that, having made a specific section for launchers and docks in that article, they choose to mention a dock that hasn't been updated in over four years instead of one that is newer (but already got to 1 million downloads), is in active development, is #3 in ranking, and owes nothing to RocketDock in terms of user and editor reviews.

They must have had their reasons, but to me it doesn't make sense (I might be a bit biased over this, though, eheh)... at the very least they should have mentioned all three docks.

There is one thing I'm sure: whatever their reasons, it had nothing to do with the quality of Nexus itself.

You tell 'em dude. I tried Rocket dock once awhile ago and it left much to be desired. I'd much rather have Nexus and Objectdock. They play so nice together. lol

In the original "Best Apps", they aren't for the reasons Jorge cited. The whole "Best Apps" has succeeded in irritating me on several levels.

In a piece like that, criteria should be listed. Also, what about "Launchy"? And, if non development isn't a criterion, why wasn't Keyboard Launchpad mentioned (sorry, a pet peeve - it probably wasn't because it isn't generally available).

Too bloody right. Nexus lives on my desktop.

All three docks are great docks. Whichever the user chooses will depend much on personal preference, I guess. I love the simplicity and elegance of ObjectDock's v2 settings dialog, for instance.

The only problem is that, sadly, RocketDock is now a dead end because development on it stopped four years ago. No more new features or bug fixes. This is what usually happens when a project is not backed up by a commercial side.
