Ramblings of an old Doc

Back in June 2011 (http://drjbhl.joeuser.com/article/409427/Just_Think_About_This) I told you about a company named Emotiv and the possibilities ahead of us.

At CES 2012, I admit it managed to skate by my attention but it seems they’d managed to demonstrate mind control over a skateboard!

Please watch “The Board of Imagination” video here: http://vimeo.com/37232050

How cool is this? Awesome!

Beyond skateboarding, lies a realm somewhat closer to my heart. The realm of people hurt by diseases and violence. Now, it’s perfectly clear that the brain and computer can be interfaced successfully (even with Windows 8 Developer Preview!).

Beyond this, the company advertises:

“Artistic and creative expression - Use your thoughts, feeling, and emotion to dynamically create color, music, and art.

Life changing applications for disabled patients, such as controlling an electric wheelchair, mind-keyboard, or playing a hands-free game.

Games & Virtual Worlds - Experience the fantasy of controlling and influencing the virtual environment with your mind. Play games developed specifically for the EPOC, or use the EmoKey to connect to current PC games and experience them in a completely new way.” – Emotive http://www.emotiv.com/apps/epoc/299/

The engine behind all this is the EmoKey:

“EmoKey links the Emotiv technology to your applications by easily converting detected events into any combination of keystrokes. EmoKey is a nonintrusive, lightweight, background process that runs behind your existing applications or games. EmoKey lets you create profiles that define how detections are mapped to keystroke combinations. Your profiles can then be saved and shared so you can use profiles that your friends have created for your favorite games and software. EmoKey profiles can be as simple as linking the Expressiv smile detection to characters such as "", so that chat applications instantly know when you smile. Or they can be as complex as linking a "lift" command to a sequence of keystrokes that trigger a levitation spell in a game. When combined, the Emotiv EPOC neuroheadset and Emokey make your inputs more simple, personal, natural, and direct. There's no need for keystroke combinations, simply smile or focus on a command and your applications respond. Use EmoKey to interact with your digital applications like instant messaging and virtual environments, or experience your current PC games in a completely new way.” – ibid

Well, just “thought” I’d share this with you!

This is the fucking future right here. Yes, it's got 20 years of research at least before we reach the same level of control that we have on PCs today with a simple mouse and keyboard. Nevertheless. In a 100 years, people will look at keyboards and mouses like the people of today look on [insert good analogy here].

i wonder what the military applications will be

For anyone interested in the medical aspects of Brain Computer Interfaces, I'd suggest taking a look at this article: http://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/S0025-6196(12)00123-1/fulltext

Thats beyond awesome! My hope that a interface capable of downloading the human brain into a server just increased ever so slightly!

Have just discover Emotiv... but i was already knowing Neurosky ( http://www.neurosky.com/Products/MindWave.aspx )...

First game have appear in 2009... may the force be with you : http://www.usatoday.com/life/lifestyle/2009-01-06-force-trainer-toy_N.htm ... along with http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2009/02/mattel-previews/ ...

A "funny" hack : http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/03/mindflex-hack/

Gadgetshow 2011 :

Always good to have multiple business working on the same thing... it mean lower price tag for consumer and fast technology evolution... i don't think that we will need 100 years for control computer with mind...

A 2009 PC game controled by mind :

Software made to access the brainwave/thought patterns of an individual can be modified to send messages along those very same wavelengths in a sort of feedback loop with the intent..........

This in answer to tesb. Not long ago a helmet was perfected for air force fighter pilots to lock on to a target and launch a missile to destroy it. Not to be confused with the optic that follows eye movement to lock on a target, this helmet monitors brainwave patterns and those variables it associates with a command response such as fire. This could be nothing more than a trickle down from an already existing military technology. Wouldn't be the first time.

very true Uvah but most things are just simplified militairy technologies...
Even if i dont like the lazyness factor behind it , the NOT working out your body part (training your muscles ).
But i do like the brain training part, even if its not a muscle but training that organ is never wrong.

I am impressed. It must have taken an enormous amount of work.............to find a skateboarder with a brain.

Do I notice just a hint of sarcasm there?

I've seen videos of dogs skateboarding. just sayin'.

death and destruction

lets just hope it don't get a Virus and pass it on to the user..

Imagine how twitchy some of the current games, like fighting games, will/could get with more advanced, streamlined versions of these. Hell, even programmers might be able to generate huge swaths of code instantaneously, etc.

I actually played with something like this, it was the Neruosky Mindband. I also created a game on xna with the sdk that come with the devices.

Lets just say it sucked.
