Ramblings of an old Doc

Neowin has posted some screenshots of Windows 8 build 8220. Turns out MS has stolen my idea! lol.

Well… I did put up screenies of Noir without a start button (Desktop Screenshot of the Month thread) and now, in W8 8220 (6.2.8220.0) the famous orb seems to be missing. Also, the super bar (or Dock Bar… the task bar) is remaining and you’ll need it (if you’re getting W8) as a place to pin your most used (non-tiled) apps in order to have rapid access to them.

I have a better idea: Tiles. And it’s skinnable.

Well, if you rely on rumor (at this point), the Orb reappears on mouse-over in the bottom left corner. Why is it needed at all? The Winflag or just a hotspot would suffice, imo… but they aren’t asking. Anyway, here’s a pic of what the old start menu changed into:

Guess I'm just old school. I want to look at wallpaper such as a picture or design. To many way to keep things neat with tiles, fences, docks, and other means. Not going to look at what I see in the above picture. No win 8 for me.

No win 8 for me.

Ditto for me. Some "Upgrade" - MS has gone from the Fisher-Price look to a ToysRus UI.

Windows 7 does everything I need..... with a little help from WindowBlinds. I see no compelling reason to change OS's.

I'll tell you now..... My computer will NEVER look like that..........

While I like seeing the start button and teh start panel skinned, I almost never use either one.  I tap the Windows key and start typing what I want to start. (Of course, somethines it doesn't work on teh first try.  I blame Microsoft.)

i also dont like the ugly look but im certain it will only take a day to change that...

that look is still better than quite a few windowblinds since the advent of Vista and 7.

Sorry, there is just too much left that is not able to be skinned, VERY few blinds look right to me.

Let's just hope that Metro look will be able to be customized to a better degree.

Here is an early prototype PC designed with the Metro UI in mind.  It didn't turn out well.

That Win8 screen has got to be the ugliest thing I've seen since Win95 !!  For one thing, I don't like "flat". Even my iPhone has a better looking screen than Win8, and that's saying a lot. I certainly hope that the UI's can be skinned throughout or You will never see that ghastly thing on my computer.      -- Ace --

I used to do the same, but Launchy replaced that for me, and I haven't looked back.

I keep staring at these Win8 previews and no matter how hard I try, I keep ending up in the same place - Man that's ugly.

What makes Launchy better?

(I think I tried it after I used Firefox's Ubiquity for a while and loving that . . but not loving Launchy after Ubiquity failed to gain enough traction and I went to Chrome as my primary browser on the PC.)

Mostly, that you can customize what is indexed and searched to a fairly fine-grained level.  There's also plugin support, and it's skinnable.  What's not to love?

Isn't 'Tiles' easier?
