Ramblings of an old Doc

Last weekend we changed our clocks and the batteries in our smoke detectors (if you didn’t, do it now!) which made me think

of other things that a person should have around… like a first aid kit, and an emergency duffel which you can grab and run (food, water, first aid, change of clothes, etc.).

So then my eyes lighted on me computer…. and decided to get you moving to prepare for the worst.

AVG has a really good set of tools available for that “Doomsday” scenario. Get your system back and clean and fix it – for free.

As you all know, AVG is a trusted name in antivirals. Sometimes, no matter what you do, a virus will get by your defenses.

This is for that time. You should have this in your toolbox – especially if you don’t have anything else.

The AVG Rescue CD/USB contains the following components:
Antimalware:
  • The latest version of AVG’s powerful protection against viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, identity theft, rootkits, and more
Administration toolkit: A wide-ranging collection of system recovery tools:
  • Midnight Commander - a two-panel file manager so you can always see what you’re doing and what’s happening where
  • Windows Registry Editor - a simple registry editor to assist in the repair of registry entries
  • TestDisk - a powerful hard drive recovery tool to reconstruct FAT32 and NTFS file systems
  • Ping - to test the availability of network resources such as servers, domains, and IP addresses
  • Common Linux programs and services - vi text editor, OpenSSH daemon, ntfsprogs, and others.

System Requirements:

Minimum system requirements

Processor: Intel Pentium 600MHz  Memory (RAM) 768 MB (CD), 256 MB (USB)

Hard disk free space (for installation): 0 MB

Hard disk space is not required , as the software will not be installed on the inoperable PC

Operating systems:

AVG Rescue CD is compatible with:

Operating System:  MS Windows XP (x32, x64), Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit), Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit), Windows 2003 Server (32 and 64 bit),

Windows 2008 Server (32 and 64 bit), Most popular Linux distributions

Languages

AVG Rescue CD is available in English only.

How it works

The AVG Rescue CD is provided in two versions: an ISO image that can be easily burned to an optical disc (CD), or a compressed version that can be installed to a bootable flash drive (USB). Once this is done, you can simply boot from the drive of choice directly to the AVG menu, where you can scan for viruses, edit files, test your drive, or even edit the registry. You can also access a number of common Linux tools to make changes to your system.

Two video tutorials are available to show you how to download and use the AVG Rescue CD:

How to create a AVG Rescue CD
How to remove an infection from your PC using AVG Rescue CD

Folks, please do yourselves a favor and do this. Have it ready. May you never need it… but if and when you do, you may well not be able to find it or download to a zip drive nor burn the iso.

Remember, your BIOS has to have boot from CD or USB at the top of your boot order, and if you decide on the CD you have to burn the iso to a disk… and don’t forget to label it!

Testdisk is fantastic.  Began using that years ago.  FYI I have successfully used it (testdisk) to recreate a partition table and thereby regain access to a drive a friend had mistakenly formatted and already begun installing a new OS onto.

Fire Extinguisher.

If you drive you need 2.

One in the home and one in the car.

Fire Blanket is also needed in the kitchen.

Excellent additions, Jafo. Thanks.

Good hearing from you, the_Monk.

Some info re: TestDisk:

TestDisk was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

TestDisk can

  • Fix partition table, recover deleted partition
  • Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup
  • Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector
  • Fix FAT tables
  • Rebuild NTFS boot sector
  • Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup
  • Fix MFT using MFT mirror
  • Locate ext2/ext3/ext4 Backup SuperBlock
  • Undelete files from FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ext2 filesystem
  • Copy files from deleted FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3/ext4 partitions.

TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite recovery.

TestDisk can run under

  • DOS (either real or in a Windows 9x DOS-box),
  • Windows (NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, Windows 7 (x86 & x64),
  • Linux,
  • FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD,
  • SunOS and
  • MacOS X
